「神道」を英語で言ってみる❣️
今日はクリスマス🎄🎅🎄なんですけど、日本人は日本人らしくということで、おもいきって「神道」を取り上げてみました。日本人にとって「神道」とは宗教なのか、それとも生き方の道を示した教えであるのか、なかなか解釈が難しいところです。しかし、外国の方に日本人の宗教観や考え方の根本にあるものを説明するときに避けては通れない「神道」、さあ、英語で言ってみよう❣️
１．「神道」とは何でしょうか？
神道 神道は日本固有の宗教であり、神の摂理、自然の法則、そして祖先崇拝などを説いています。歴史的には、日本の文明の誕生以来存在していますが、6世紀中頃の仏教の伝来にともなって、よりはっきりした教義を持つようになりました。
神道の神話によると、太陽の女神である天照大神が高天原の主神として生まれました。女神は弟の不品行に業を煮やして洞穴へと身を隠してしまいました。そのために世界中が暗闇の大混乱に陥ったのです。そこで多くの神々はお祭り騒ぎをして、女神を呼び出そうとしました。ついに女神は現われ、地上に光が戻り、世の秩序も回復したというのです。
女神から6世代たって、神武が日本の最初の天皇になりました。この伝説は、皇族の他の豪族に対する支配権を裏付ける役割をはたしました。したがって、神道は天皇制の一部に組み込まれました。1868年の明治維新にともなって、神道は天皇の権威を助長する国家宗教となり、神社は政府の管轄下に置かれました。国家と宗教の合体は国粋主義的な気風をもたらしました。
特に、1930年代の愛国主義の時期には、国家神道が広く普及しました。しかし、第2次大戦後、国家との関係が断ち切られ、神社神道と宗派神道のみが残ったわけです。今日、人々は祈願成就や参拝に神社に出かけます。
２．「神道」(Shintoism)を英語で言ってみる❣️
Shintoism is a religion unique to Japan that teaches divine providence,
the laws of nature, and ancestor worship. Historically, it has existed since
the birth of Japanese civilization, but it became a more distinct doctrine
with the arrival of Buddhism in the mid-6th century.
According to Shinto mythology, Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun, was born as the chief goddess of the high heavens. The goddess was so displeased
with her brother's misbehavior that she hid in a cave. As a result, the whole
world was plunged into darkness and chaos. So the many gods held a festival
and tried to invoke the Goddess. Finally, the Goddess appeared, and light
returned to the earth, restoring order to the world.
Six generations after the goddess, Jimmu became the first emperor of Japan. This legend served to confirm the dominance of the imperial family over the
other powerful families. With the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Shinto became a
state religion that promoted the authority of the emperor, and shrines were
placed under the jurisdiction of the government. The combination of state
and religion brought about a nationalistic atmosphere.
Especially during the period of patriotism in the 1930s, State Shintoism
spread widely. However, after World War II, the relationship with the state was severed, and only Shinto shrines and sects of Shinto remained. Today, people go to Shinto shrines for prayers and worship.
３． Japanese gods are not perfect.
日本の神様は完全無欠ではない (Japanese gods are not perfect.)。この言葉は八百万の神を信じる日本人の宗教観をよく表している言葉ですよね。そして、日本人の良きところの根本でもあるのかな、という気もします。

Japanese gods are not perfect. It is said that the gods work together to protect the natural world and people. The idea that they are not perfect is projected onto the way of life of the Japanese people, and instead of comparing themselves with others and finding differences and eliminating or criticizing them, they have found commonalities and supplemented what they lack. This humble spirit is the Japanese people, and this is the Way of God.
This way of life, humbly accepting differences and transforming them into strength, which has been handed down from generation to generation in this country, is the greatest strength of the Japanese people, and the current prosperity of this country is the result of this strength being utilized. The strength, gentleness, suppleness, beauty, and richness that those who pay homage to the shrine receive from this space, whether they can see it or not, must be the result of the history that has united and accumulated many shrines.
