Think of those animals who would shave their own hair to appear pretty and neat,
in front of the ones*1 they love; ach, we monk-pretenders,
ever so vain yet romantic in our notion of coming death, that advances itself
each day while you gaze at the shadowy afterimage of your ego.

自分の愛おしい人の前でかわいく、綺麗に見せようとするために、自分の毛を剃る動物たちのことを考えてみよう；
嗚呼 我々僧侶気取りは、
虚栄心の塊でありながら、来るべき死というロマンチックな観念を抱いている、
毎日、自分の顔の影送りを映し出す鏡を見つめている間に。
