久しぶりにニュース記事の学習をします。ウクライナで現在起きていることについて、すでに何本かのニュース記事が紹介されています。今日はその中の１つについて学習します。

How You Can Help the People of Ukraine

As attacks on Ukraine by Russian forces continue, many people around the world are wondering what they can do to help. Here are a few ways you can make a difference:

ロシアによるウクライナの攻撃は続いています。世界の多くの人は「自分たちに何ができるだろう」と思っています。ここではあなたにできるいくつかのことを紹介します。

■Donate money／寄付をする

There are numerous aid organizations working in Ukraine and neighboring countries, supporting those who are trying to leave the country, as well as those who are still there.

Volunteers with the Ukrainian Red Cross Society are currently providing Ukrainians with packages containing food, clothes and health products. They are also providing first aid training and are helping people with disabilities get to safety.

The National Bank of Ukraine has also set up a special bank account so people can donate directly to the country's armed forces.

■Stay informed and support local journalism／情報を入手し、地元のジャーナリズムを支援する

Be aware that there is a lot of false information being shared online, so make sure to get your information from reliable sources.

Supporting Ukrainian journalism is also very important. Ukrainian English-language news sites, such as the Kyiv Independent and Liga.net, are providing regular updates.

ネット上では誤った情報が多く共有されているので、信頼できる情報源から情報を得るようにしましょう。

ウクライナのジャーナリズムを支援することも非常に重要です。Kyiv IndependentやLiga.netなど、ウクライナの英語ニュースサイトが定期的に更新しています。

■Don't be silent／黙っていてはいけない

Join any protests happening in your area to demand an end to the violence against Ukraine and to show your support for the Ukrainian community.

Write to your local politicians and put pressure on them to place further sanctions on the Russian government. Use social media to share information and raise awareness — but, again, make sure to use reliable sources.

Finally, remember that this is Vladimir Putin's war, not that of the Russian people. Although some may support Putin's actions, many do not, and there are anti-war protests taking place in cities all over Russia.

地元の政治家に手紙を書き、ロシア政府にさらなる制裁を加えるよう圧力をかける。ソーシャルメディアを使って情報を共有し、意識を高める。ただし、信頼できる情報源を使うようにすること。

最後に、これはプーチンの戦争であり、ロシア国民の戦争ではないことを忘れてはならない。プーチンの行動を支持する人もいるかもしれないが、そうでない人も多く、ロシア全土の都市で反戦デモが起こっています。

Yes,I think so.But we rarely talk about war directly. This is because we prefer to avoid political talk. But I look up information about Ukraine every day on the Internet.

２、What did you know about the Ukraine-Russia conflict before Putin's invasion?

To be honest,I didn't know about this problem when the war started.
However, after this issue arose I looked into the cause.Russia and Ukraine were one country during the Soviet Union. But, they became separate countries when the Soviet Union collapsed.

Ukraine is also said to be the birthplace of Russia.Ukraine has a large land area with a thriving agriculture and IT industry.Ukraine has the potential to develop greatly in the future.Therefore, Russia wants to subdue.However, Ukraine is trying to join NATO, which is hostile to Russia.

In March 2014, Russia took the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and made it independent from Ukraine. It then placed it under Russian control.That is where the fight began.Ukraine started buying natural gas from other countries, which it had been buying from Russia.Therefore, it stopped listening to Russia.Russia attacked Ukraine to make it comply.

I cannot donate money for the war effort. However, I donated to help those affected.

４、Have you come across any false information about Putin's invasion online?
プーチンの侵攻について、ネット上で誤った情報を目にしたことはありませんか？

I have not seen any fake information directly. But I don't even know which information is actually true.

５、Do you think your country should place additional sanctions on additional＝追加の、Russia?sanction＝認証

I agree. Economic sanctions and other measures will not be effective unless countries cooperate. Japan imports natural gas and marine products from Russia. Stopping imports would affect the economy, but it is necessary to stop the war.

■嘘だらけの情報戦

ロシアによるウクライナ侵略のニュースを見ていて驚いたのが、ロシア人兵士が「実戦になるとは知らなかった」「ここがウクライナだとは知らかった」といっているというニュースが流れたこと。「演習だ」といわれて連れてこられて、いきなり戦わされて死んでいくことになったらと思うと、ぞっとします。

ほかにも、ロシア国内でテレビの情報を見て信じている高齢の人たちは、ロシアがウクライナを攻撃していることすら知らず、ウクライナに住んでいる娘たちが命からがら脱出しているのに信じないというから、これもまたびっくりです。

ロシア国内にいて、外からの情報がまったく入らないロシア人ならまだしも、日本国内にいて連日テレビでもネットでも情報が自由に手に入るロシア大使館のミハイル.ガルージン駐日ロシア大使も「ウクライナを侵略、攻撃していない」という姿勢を崩さず、発言していること。

東京・神谷町にあるロシア大使館の前は何度も通ったことがありますが、ほかの大使館の前には警備員は見当たらないのに、いつもロシア大使館の前だけ警察官なのか警備員なのかが数名いて物々しい雰囲気でした。
今は、ロシア大使館の前に抗議の人たちが集まるからもっとかもしれません。

大使という立場上、「ウクライナは攻撃していないし、民間人は犠牲になっていない」といっているのか、犠牲者が出ていることはしっているけどネオナチを倒すためには多少の犠牲はつきものだと思っているのか。気になるところです。

同時に、自分も正しい情報を取っているつもりで、その情報源が間違っているという可能性もある、ということを常に考えておかなければいけないと感じます。

■英語学習を通じて世界がより近く感じるように

今回、海外のニュースやTwitterのスペースなど、様々なところでウクライナ侵攻に関する情報を直接英語で聞く機会が増えました。もし、日本がロシアのように閉鎖された状況で、日本国内のニュースや新聞記事がうそばかり報道していたら、日本語しか読めないというのはかなり怖いことだと思います。
もちろん翻訳すれば、たいていの言語のニュースは読めるのでしょうが、そもそもそんなことをしないだろうし……。
ロシアに住んでいてロシア語しかわからず、ロシアのテレビでしか情報を収集していないと、正しい情報を得るのが非常に難しくなる。
これは決して他人事ではないですね。

よくリスニング力を高めたかったら、海外の映画やドラマを見たり、ポッドキャスト、Spotifyなどを聞くといいといわれますが、今回はニュース記事によって鍛えられている気がします。しかも、「時間が合ったら聞く」という趣味ではなく、知らないとまずいと感じです。こんなところで英語のリスニング力が上がるきっかけができるとは、とても複雑です。
