外人部隊は日本人を含む数多くの外国人を受け入れています。
入隊希望者は自費でフランスに渡航しなくてはなりません。日本国籍保有者は3カ月以内の滞在であればビザは不要です。
入隊志願はパリ最寄りの以下の選抜センターで、24時間年中無休で受け付けています。

フランス外人部隊は１８３１年に創設された組織で、人種、国籍、宗教、政治信条、出身階層、教育水準等を異にする有志によって構成されているフランス軍の正式な組織で、その構成、規則、装備は陸軍の歩兵隊、機甲隊、工兵隊のものに準じています。

ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻をめぐり、在日ウクライナ大使館が公式ツイッターで「義勇兵」を呼びかけました。義勇兵とは、徴兵されるのではなく、自分で進んで応募する兵のことです。大使館によりますと、３月１日時点で約７０人の日本人が志願したということですが、政府はウクライナについて、全土を退避勧告の対象としています。また、大使館もすでにツイートを削除しています。
