NTT East and West announced on the 26th that they will end the "177" telephone service, which provides voice weather forecasts, at the end of March 2025. Around 1988, there were more than 300 million annual usages, but by 2023, this number is expected to fall to about 5.56 million.
The weather forecast telephone service began in 1955. At first, the number was different depending on the region, but in 1964 it was unified to "177". When calling from a landline, an automated voice message about weather information for the area is played, and when calling from a mobile phone, it is used in combination with the area code.
NTT East and West have also decided to end their 104 telephone number information service and publication of the telephone directory, Town Pages, at the end of March 2014, citing the spread of the Internet and declining use of landline telephones.

１７７の天気予報、７０年で幕…年間３億件から５５６万件に利用減少

　ＮＴＴ東日本と西日本は２６日、天気予報を音声で伝える電話サービス「１７７」を２０２５年３月末で終了すると発表した。インターネットの普及で気象情報を調べる手段が増え、利用が減少していた。１９８８年度頃には年間３億件以上の利用があったが、２０２３年度には約５５６万件に落ち込んでいた。
　天気予報を伝える電話サービスは１９５５年に始まった。当初は地域によって異なる番号だったが、６４年から「１７７」に統一された。固定電話からかけると、発信した地域の気象情報についての自動音声が流れる仕組みで、携帯電話からは市外局番と組み合わせて利用する。
　ＮＴＴ東西は、ネットの普及と固定電話の利用低迷などを理由に、「１０４」の電話番号案内サービスや電話帳「タウンページ」の発行を２６年３月末で終了することも決めている。
