Okay, so let's move on to today's episode.
Some of you already know that I am keen on reading children's books such as Matilda by Roald Dahl and Bluey picture books that is based on the famous Australian animation. Recently, I finished reading a book written by Anh Do who is a popular author in Australia.
As mentioned in the previous episode, I love reading children's books because they always give me some insights.
So in today's episode, I would like to introduce Weir Do that is the book I read and talk about my insights from the book. Hope you enjoy it.
さて今日の本題に入っていきたいと思います。
何回かこのpodcastを聴いてくださっている方はご存知かもしれませんが、私は児童書を読むのがとても好きな人間です。
例えばマチルダとか、ブルーイーという絵本などですね。
ちなみにブルーイーはオーストラリアでのアンパンマン、ドラえもんに匹敵するような有名なアニメーションです。
私が児童書が好きな理由はいつも気づきをもらえるからです。
今日は新しい児童書ウィーアードゥーとその本から得た気づきについてお話をしたいと思います

Okay, so first of all, I would like to introduce Weir Do.
According to the description on Amazon, this book is
"Weir Do’s the new kid in school. With an unforgettable name, a crazy family and some seriously weird habits, fitting in won’t be easy... But it will be funny!"
ではまず、ウィーアードゥーと言う本についてご紹介したいと思います。
アマゾンに書いてある説明によるとこの本はこんな感じのお話です。
「ウィーアードゥーは学校の新入生。一度聞いたら忘れられないその名前とおかしな家族。それにたまに変なことしちゃうから、学校に馴染むのにはちょっと大変そう。でも絶対きっと楽しくなること間違いなし！」
こんな感じのお話です。
As you may already noticed, the name Weir Do sounded 'weird'. It means very strange or unusual. Although Weir Do's older sister was named Sally Do which is not an unusual name, Weir Do is named based on his mum's maiden name.
Anyway, this book starts with Weir Do introducing himself in his new class and everyone can't stop laughing including the teachers.
お気づきの方もいらっしゃるかもしれませんが、Weir Doという名前は’wired’ という単語に響きが近いんです。
Weirdという単語の意味は「不思議な」とか「普通じゃない」とかでしょうか。
この主人公にはお姉さんがいるんですが、お姉さんの名前はサリーで普通の名前なんです。
主人公の名前はお母さんの旧姓を下につけられた名前なんです(オーストラリアだとたまにあるかもしれない) とにかくですね
この本は主人公が自分の名前を紹介して、その名前が面白い事からみんなが笑いが止まらなくなると言うところから始まります
Speaking of this book, it seems like the author Ahn Do is a comedian. So, the book is full of jokes including fart jokes. haha.
Also, the book contains a lot of pictures but not so much like manga.
I could finish reading this book within an hour. So it would be good for kids or ESL learners who would like to read some English books without using a dictionary.
Also, as the author is a comedian, you are able to learn some typical phrases that are used in stand-up comedy.
It would be difficult to imagine, so I will give you a quote for this example.
この本についての詳細をお話しすると、著者はコメディアンの方だそうです.
そのため、この本にはジョークがたくさん盛り込まれてます
(おならなどの子供が大好きなジョークもたくさん盛り込まれています笑)
それと、この本にはたくさん絵が書いてあります。漫画ほどでは無いですけど。 そんなわけで、私は1時間位でこの本をサクッと読み終えることができました。
なので
・この本は、お子さんとか、
・英語を学習されていらっしゃる方で辞書なしで英語の本を読んでみたい方にはすごく向いている本
なんじゃないかなと思います。
後は、先ほども申し上げた通り、この作者はコメディアンなのでスタンダップコメディーなどでよく聞くようなフレーズなども勉強することができると思います。
これだけ言うと少しイメージがわかないと思うので、ちょっと例をご紹介いたします
The quote is from the scene when Weir Do's family looks after Bella, who is a classmate of Weir Do and he crashes into her. However, heaps of events happened due to his crazy family.
At the time, he said
"It was time to say bye to Bella, and I was sure she thought I was even weirder than before, thanks to my crazy family."
この一説は、主人公の家族がお友達のベラをおうちで預かるときの一説です。
ベラは主人公のクラスメートで、主人公がちょっと恋をしている女の子です。主人公のおうちでその女の子を預かっているときにいろんな事件が起こるんですよね。おかしな家族たちだから。そんな時に彼はこのように自分の家族たちについて話します。
「これで、ベラにはさよならって言わなきゃいけないな。きっと彼女は僕のこともっと変な子だと思ったに違いない。本当にクレイジーな家族のおかげでね」
This witty comment can be seen in stand-up comedy frequently. So it might be better to start with this book if you would like to enjoy comedy in the future.
こういうウィットに富んだコメントはスタンダップコメディーだとよく見られる表現だと思います。
なので、もし将来的に英語でコメディーを見てみたいと言う方にもパターンを学ぶのには良いのかなと思います
Also, the book showed me that recent popular children's books have a tendency to use empathy to gain an audience. It is similar to SNS.
Weir Do or Bluey, both of them are quite popular in Australia including to parents, tend to use empathy. You may feel your life is understood by the creators as there are lots of scenes you will encounter in your daily life.
さてここからは、この本から得た気づきについてです。
この本から最近の児童書の傾向が見えてきたなぁと思います。
最近の児童書は共感力をよく使っているなぁと思います。
SNSに似ているといいますか。
今回挙げたウィアードゥーやブルーイーという
どちらもオーストラリアで大人気の児童書は、
共感を生むように作られているなと思います。
例えば、 どうして私たちの生活の事わかるの!?と思うぐらい、たくさん自分たちの日常生活で起こりうるようなシーンが出てきます。
I thought when I was a child, children's books were full of imaginary worlds such as Harry Potter, Matilda and so on.
It seems like the current trend of children's books might be the same as the adult world. Relatability.
I think this is not a bad thing as children can learn how to manage their struggles such as developing positive relationships with friends through books.
Actually, I also learn a lot from the books as an adult such as breaking into small pieces to discipline while getting a good laugh.
私が子供の時の児童書というのは想像の世界のお話が多かったような印象があるんですよね。
例えばハリーポッターとかマチルダとかですね。
多分、最近の児童書のトレンドとしては大人の世界と同じように「共感力」「私もこうなるかも」というのが人気になる秘訣なのかなと思いました。
ちなみに私、これは悪いことではないと思います。
なぜなら子供たち自分たちが本の中のキャラクターのように何か困ったことが起こったときにどうやって対応したらいいかをよりリアルに本から学ぶことができるからです。
大人としてもいろんなことを学んでいます。
例えば、こどもにやっちゃいけないことを教えるとき、どう噛み砕いて教えたらいいかなどですかね。
もちろんクスっと笑えるところがありながらもですけどね

In today's episode, I was talking about three things.

You can learn the phrases or styles of stand-up comedy.

The current trend of children's books may be relatability like SNS.
それではまとめに入りたいと思います。今日はウィアードゥーという児童書について3つに分けてお話しさせていただきました。
1）Weir Do という本の紹介
Wiredに聞こえるおもしろいい名前の男の子のお話
2）英語学習者の方はどんなことが学べる本？
スタンドアップコメディのパターンやフレーズなどが学べるかと思います。
後は、比較的簡単な英語なので辞書なしで読めるかなと思います。
3）この本から得た気づき
最近の児童書はSNSと同じように共感力・読者との共通点の多さ が流行りなのかなぁということでした。
