　私は作曲家として本作品に向き合うのを非常に楽しみにしていた。故に、この感想は一人の西洋音楽の作曲家という狭い視座からの恣意的なものになる事を読者に了承頂きたいと思う。
　本作品は従来のフランスの作曲家、モーリス・ラヴェル（1875-1937）に対する平易な伝記という体裁をとっているが、実際は彼の代表作《ボレロ》を主軸に、また後述する様に《ボレロ》という作品自体を「主人公」にしてラヴェルに対する評
