Googleが、飛行機から出る炭素量の推計が見られる新機能を立ち上げました。これによって私たちは、飛行機に乗る際に、料金やフライト時間とともに、より環境に配慮したものを選択できるようになります。Googleによると、この新機能追加によって、年間で１００万トン以上も炭素排出量を減らせるというのです。私は、飛行機に乗るときに金額と時間で決めていますが、この機能がついたら炭素排出量も気にして決めたいと思います。今日はそんなGoogle×環境の話です。時事ネタを読んでみましょう。

Google Says New Search Tool Helps You Fly 'Greener'
Google、新しい検索ツールで「Greener」を飛ぶことができると発表
Google searches for flights will now tell users which flights have lower carbon emissions, allowing them to choose flights that are better for the environment.
A Google search for flights now gives an estimate of how many kilograms of carbon dioxide flights will produce from start to finish. Users can also sort flights by emissions, like they can by price. Flights with lower-than-average carbon emissions are also highlighted in green.

Googleでのフライト検索は、二酸化炭素の排出量が少ないものがわかるようになって、彼らはより環境にいいフライトを選ぶことができるようになった。Googleのフライト検索は、スタートから到着まで何キロくらい二酸化炭素を排出するのかの見積もりがでるようになった。利用者はまた、価格順と同様に、排出量順にフライトを並べ替えることもできる。炭素排出量が平均より低いフライトは、緑色で表示される。

Google said the carbon emission estimates come from data from the European Environmental Agency and flight information it gets from airlines. The data includes things like an airplane's age, what type of airplane it is, how fast and high it flies, and the distance of the flight.
However, some flights may not have carbon emission estimates because Google can’t get enough information about them. Also, Google says that the estimates don't include what direction the airplane is traveling, which could affect carbon emissions if the plane is flying against a jet stream. Which fuel the airplanes use also won’t be included.

しかしながら、一部のフライトについては、Googleが十分な情報を得られないため、炭素排出量の推定値が表示されないことがある。Googleによれば、この推定値には飛行機の進行方向が含まれていない。そのため飛行機がジェット気流に逆らって飛行している場合、二酸化炭素の排出量に影響を与える可能性があるという。また、飛行機が使用する燃料も含まれていない。

Air travel only produces a small amount of the carbon emissions that cause climate change — about 2% to 3%. However, this percentage has been growing and is expected to triple by the middle of the century with the global growth in travel.
Google has added other ways to help people make greener travel choices. The search engine will list hotels that are run in a way that is better for the environment with a leaf beside their name. Google Map users can now also look for the most fuel-efficient routes between two locations.

飛行機の二酸化炭素排出量が問題になっています。今の状態でも排出量が多いのに、中間所得者層が増えてたくさんの人がより海外に行くために飛行機に乗ったら、今の３倍の排出量が予測される。とはいえ、ネットの普及もあり海外との交流が盛んになったことから、旅行を楽しむ人達は今後増えていくでしょう。そうなったときに、少しでも二酸化炭素の量を減らす手立てとして、炭素排出量に気を配るということは大事だと思います。
今まではなにもわからないから時間やお金だけで決めていたけれど、炭素排出量がわかるようになったら、そこに目が向き、より環境にやさしい機体を選ぼうという人が増えてくるでしょう。また飛行機で表示することによって、車や電車、他の乗り物にも同じように炭素排出量が表示されるようになってくるかもしれません。みんなが意識して、より炭素排出量が少ないものを選ぶというふうになってきたら増加のスピードを緩められるかもしれません。
飛行機にまったく乗らない人なら「飛行機に乗るべきではない」で終わらせられる問題かもしれませんが、旅行などで海外に行きたい私からしたら、少し複雑な問題です。
