France in crisis as riots escalate - BBC News - YouTube

The French government has said it is considering all options - including declaring a state of emergency - after a third night of escalating violence and rioting in cities and towns across France.
Hundreds of police were injured last night and more than 900 people arrested. Ministers asked for public transport across France tonight to be suspended, and some major events have been cancelled as the government tries to stop scenes like this taking place for the fourth night running.
The protests began in a Paris suburb on Tuesday when a police officer shot dead a 17-year-old boy of north African descent during a traffic stop in the Nanterre. Footage of the shooting was posted online.
The unrest quickly spread across France, fuelled by accusations of police racism and wider discrimination against minority communities.
Around 45,000 police officers have been deployed on the streets.

Gerald Darmanin, France’s interior minister, told parliament that the two police officers were being questioned and acknowledged that the images posted on social media were “extremely shocking”.
He urged people to “respect the grief of the family and the presumption of innocence of the police”.
Laurent Nunez, the Paris police chief, admitted in an interview with BFM television that the action of the officer “raises questions”, though he said it was possible the officer felt threatened.
Yassine Bouzrou, the family’s lawyer, told the same channel that while all parties needed to wait for the result of the investigation, the images “clearly showed a policeman killing a young man in cold blood”.
“This is a long way from any kind of legitimate defence,” he said, adding the family had filed a complaint accusing the police of “lying” by initially claiming the car had tried to run down the officers.

Looting and riots erupt in France as Macron considers state of emergency - YouTube
Jul 1, 2023 #macron #france #riots
British tourists travelling to France have been warned of possible curfews and transport restrictions as Emmanuel Macron considers imposing a state of emergency to crack down on spiralling riots and looting.
The warnings came as the French president called on parents to keep their children at home as he blamed video games for “intoxicating them”.
Curfews have so far been imposed in the towns of Clamart, Compiègne and Neuilly-sur-Marne, and Gerald Darmanin, French interior minister, announced that “all buses and tramways” will cease to operate after 9pm on Friday.
“Locations and timing of riots are unpredictable,” the British foreign office said in updated travel advice. “You should monitor the media, avoid areas where riots are taking place.”
It came as Mr Macron cut short a European Council meeting for crisis talks as he said there were “no taboos” on clamping down on rioting triggered by a police shooting.
