----PORTLAND, Ore. Westley Allan Dodd said Tuesday he kept an illustrated diary of the murders of three young boys so there would be evidence of his crimes in the event of his death.

''I wrote them wanting it to be read eventually,'' Dodd told KGW-AM.

''If I should be killed the next day in a car wreck or something, there would be a record, and they would know. I figured if something happened to me, my dad would find it and he would turn them over to police right away. I wanted police to know what had happened.''

Dodd will be formally sentenced to death Thursday for the murders of Cole Neer, 11, and William Neer, 10, of Vancouver, Wash., and Lee Iseli, 4, of Portland. A Clark County jury recommended the sentence earlier this month at Vancouver.

Dodd, 29, told the radio station that he considered committing suicide shortly before moving to Vancouver last fall. He said he also considered killing himself after his arrest, but felt he ''owed it to (the families of his victims) to go through the trial and be punished in whatever way the court and the jury said and not chicken out and take the easy way out.''

He said he believes he would be killed ''within an hour, if not sooner'' if placed in the general population at the Washington State Penitentiary at Walla Walla. Dodd will be placed on Death Row, where the likelihood of his coming into unsupervised contact with other inmates is remote.

He said he kept diaries to serve as evidence of the crimes so there would be little doubt that he was responsible for them if he died before being apprehended.

But rather than being written to let the parents know what happened to their boys, Dodd's diaries are filled with raw, pornographic language and are illustrated with Polaroid photographs of him sexually abusing one of his victims both before and after death.
