今日は波の音が聞こえるような天気の日。晴れながら曇っている日。
こんな日にコーヒーを飲むときは、落ち着いた曲を聴きたくなります。
今回の「コーヒーと音楽」で紹介するのは、Elvis PerkinsのWhile You Were Sleepingです。
確かこの曲は、トップに上げたDavid LettermanのLate Showで知ったのでした。
見上げるように歌うスタイル。徐々にバンドメンバーが音を重ねていくステージング。惹きこまれるものがあります。
Elvis Perkinsの父親はAnthony Perkins。ヒッチコックのサイコにも出ている俳優です。母親はBerry Berenson。写真家、俳優、モデルをしていた方です。
残念なことに母親のBerry Berensonは、なんとあの９.１１の同時多発テロでワールド・トレード・センターに衝突したAmerican Airlines Flight 11の乗客の一人でした。
僕はあの時、リアルタイムでテレビ映像を見ていました。そこにこのElvis Perkinsが繋がるとは。
Elvis Perkinsの音楽を知った時は母親のことを知らなかったのですが、深い哀愁感の裏にはやはり秘められたものがあるのですね。

この曲の歌詞の時制が過去形から現在形に変わるところが素敵です。
時間の経過に含まれる過去。その過去に含まれる暗闇。そこから現在へと移り、静寂の中に微かな光が差し込むかのような終わり方。
