英訳「落日」(辻征夫)

11月７日、緒真坂さんの記事で、辻征夫「落日」(「教科書の詩をよみかえす」)が紹介されていました。
素敵な詩だったので、英訳してみました。(*なぜ英訳するの？、と我ながら思いつつも😱)

A Sunset

👩The sun is setting, isn't it?

👨I bet I can stop breathing
till the sun completely sets.

👩No, thanks. You don't have to
stop breathing.
You once told me a more attractive
story.

👨What kind of story ?

👩"Just imagine we visit a city
where the sun sets together, and
enjoy living a happy life there,"
you said.

👨I've forgotten that.

👩But, you have been to the city
alone, haven't you?

👨It was an ordinary city.
It had a canal and a long fence,
and it also had an old sake bar.

👩You were drinking sake there,
weren't you?

👨When I was drinking sake,
someone came down from the
second floor.

👩Who was it?

👨All this happened in my dream.
I cried in spite of myself,
"I am captain of this ship.
Did you forget me ?"

👩Is your story true?

👨Sure.I told you the truth.

......silence......

やっぱり、日本語のほうがいい
ですね(-_-;)、と思う。
「夕日沈みそうね」「～いったわ」と言えば、女性が話していることがわかります。
英語だと、語尾を見て性別を判別することが難しい。
語尾を「付加疑問文」にして区別しようとしたが、しっくりこない。
やっぱり日本語すごいかも、とも思いました。
