This time, we are pleased to provide details about the Dedication Butoh Performance by butoh dancer Taketeru Kudo, which will be held for the third time this year.

Directions to Bushu Ome Kotohira Shrine

The venue for the Dedication Butoh performance is Bushu Ome Kotohira Shrine (220 Honcho, Ome City, Tokyo 198-0083), located about a 15-minute walk from JR Ome Station. The shrine is known for being in such a hard-to-find location that it's rumored to be "reachable only by the chosen ones." Therefore, we recommend checking the route in advance.

To ensure you find your way, here is a link to a webpage that provides directions. This year, we are aiming to gather 150 people at Kotohira Shrine, so if you read this article, please spread the word to those around you!

Previous Dedication Butoh Performances

The Dedication Butoh is a dance performance by butoh dancer Taketeru Kudo and musicians, first held on October 30, 2022. The participating musician in 2022 was violinist Yuriko Mukojima.

In 2023, the Dedication Butoh was held on the autumn equinox, September 23rd. Once again, Yuriko Mukojima provided the musical accompaniment, as she did in 2022. Despite ongoing renovations at Bushu Ome Kotohira Shrine and heavy rainfall, Taketeru Kudo boldly embraced these conditions, performing Butoh on the roof while being drenched by the rain. It was a truly breathtaking performance.

Why Butoh in Ome?

Simply put, it’s because I love Butoh. The idea for the Dedication Butoh came to life purely from my straightforward desire: "I want to see Butoh in Ome!" Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible without the understanding and support of the performers, as well as Bushu Ome Kotohira Shrine, which is one of the most welcoming shrines in Japan, and the local community that protects the shrine.

I want the people of Ome to become more familiar with Butoh, a world-renowned dance form born in Japan. With that in mind, starting this year, we’ve teamed up with the shrine to expand our efforts to promote Butoh, and we’ve applied for a grant from Arts Council Tokyo. This project is titled, "Hosted by Bushu Ome Kotohira Shrine: From the Last Butoh to Butoh Half a Century Later."

To truly understand Butoh, it’s essential to learn comprehensively when, who, how, and where Butoh was created.

In line with this, from July 14th of this year, we held the "Yasuo Kuroda Photo Exhibition: Tatsumi Hijikata’s Final Butoh" at "THE ATELIER," located near Ome Station. Mr. Kuroda, a photographer residing in Ome, captured the final Butoh performance of Butoh's founder, Tatsumi Hijikata.

During the exhibition, more than 150 local residents and Butoh fans gathered, creating a lively atmosphere. For us, this photo exhibition became a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of what Butoh truly is.

By tracing the roots of Butoh in this way, we aim to illuminate the path towards its current form. This upcoming Dedication Butoh performance begins by reflecting on the origins of Butoh.

Film Screening of Hōsōtan Confirmed

This event is part of a project organized by Local Art Consumption LLC(合同会社ARTの地産地消). In collaboration with Cinema Neko(シネマネコ) in Ome City, we will be screening Hōsōtan, the only Butoh performance by Tatsumi Hijikata that has been fully captured on film. This rare archival footage is a significant resource documenting Hijikata's work.

We believe that, in addition to photographs, showing this film to the local community will further deepen their understanding of Butoh.

On Sunday, October 6th, from 1:35 PM, we will invite Butoh scholar Takashi Morishita to speak about the allure of Hijikata's Butoh, the highlights of Hōsōtan, and its historical significance and meaning within the context of Japanese art history.

After the talk event, attendees can head over to Bushu Ome Kotohira Shrine to enjoy the Dedication Butoh performance!

In Conclusion

I’ll say it again—I love Butoh. It’s still difficult for me to fully articulate why I love it and what exactly draws me to it.

However, one thing I can say is that in modern Japan, where everything from the economy to art and daily life seems sanitized and packaged, Butoh is the one thing that still reveals the muddy soul of the Japanese people. When we witness it, we too can rediscover the muddy life that has sunk deep into our hearts like sediment.

When I find that within myself, I feel an indescribable joy. With that, I hope you look forward to the Butoh-filled October in Ome.お知らせ
