ロックに対する熱い心。大事ですね。
人は誰しも"情熱家"。時に迷ったり泣いたりすることもあるけど。
それでも。めげることなく。前を向いていきたいですね！
俳優の陣内孝則は駆け出しのころから、内田に目をかけてもらった。ジョー山中、安岡力也など「ロック勢」が俳優として出演した映画『座頭市』でのことだ。
「僕たちが全員斬られ役だった。それに腹を立てた裕也さんがプロヂューサーを呼びつけ、『ロックは死なないんだよ！』って怒鳴ったんです。隣で聞いていて呆れてしまいましたが、あれは僕たち後輩への愛情だった。本当に優しい人でした」
撮影現場で、陣内が緒形拳に挨拶したときにも、思わぬ「激励」を受けた。
「なんで挨拶するんだ。お前はロックじゃないのか。緒方なんかに負けるんじゃないぞ！」
万事がこんな調子で「メンドクサイ」人だった。
「裕也さんといるのは大変でした。でも、嫌いになるどころかどんどん好きになっていく」
いくつになっても、ぶれない、媚びない、屈しない。本物のロックンローラーだった。
内田裕也さん。ミュージシャン。
私の勝手な印象ですが。ミュージシャンは苦労している方が多いと思う。
それだけ。曲を作るという工程は大変なのかも…。
音楽家としての世界観。それは独特なものだけど。
そこから何かしらのヒントを得ることは可能かもしれませんね！

Democrats may find themselves holding their breath on Thursday when Joe Biden delivers the annual state-of-the-union address. It is the highest-stakes speech of his presidency to date.
A general-election rematch with Donald Trump is all but certain. Many voters will make up their minds in the next three months. THe Economist's poll tracker has Mr Trump ahead of Mr Biden nationally by two points, but polls of the critical swing states give him a bigger lead. Many voters think Mr Trump is better at dealing with the economy and the border.
On Thursday Mr Biden needs to argue that he has made progress on the economy. He will have to blame the Republicans for blocking progress on fixing such problems as undocumented imigration. Above all, he must allay growing anxiety that at 81 he is no longer up to the job. That would be a tall order for even the most nimble and eloquent of presidents.

Economists had thought there was a slim chance that European inflation would ease enough for the European inflation would ease enough for the European Central Bank to start cutting interest rates in March or April. But those hopes were dashed by February's figure: consumer prices were 2.6% higher than a year before. When it meets on Thursday the bank will probably say it needs more data to be confident that the inflation rate will fall to its 2 % target before making cuts.
The inflation numbers are worrying. Seasonally adjusted, February's month-on-month increase in consumer prices implies an annualised inflation rate of 5%, after 5.2% in January. Even excluding energy prices, the annualised figure is 3.5%. Compared with three months ago prices, excluding energy, are 3.4% higher in annualised, seasonally adjusted terms. That number had hit a low of 1.6% in November. Europe's economy will probably have to wait until June for an ECB rate cut.

「ゼニが欲しけりゃ練習せい」
深い言葉ですね…。日本人。私たちはよく謙虚だと言われる。
謙虚であること。それは基本的には良いこと。それでも。
何事も程度が大切。度が過ぎて謙虚である必要はないかもね。
幸福＝収入では無いにしても。ある程度の金銭は人生を豊かにする香辛料。
上手い具合に。バランスを見極めていきたいね。
南海ホークスを「100万ドルの内野陣」「400フィート打線」と呼ばれるパ・リーグの常勝球団に育てた。監督してあげた1773勝という記録はいまだ破られていない金字塔だ。だが、日本シリーズではなかなか巨人には勝てなかった。
「巨人は銀座のブランデー、ホークスは道頓堀の赤ちょうちん」
鶴岡自身そう言って、巨人の金満野球を批判し、打ち倒すことに執念を燃やした。「グラウンドにはゼニが落ちている。ゼニが欲しけれゃ練習せい」という叱咤激励の言葉もいかにも関西風。東京に出張した際も、「巨人の本拠地」に長居するのを嫌い、大阪にトンボ返りするほどだから筋金入りだ。
とにかく巨人を倒すために、徹底的にデータを分析した。そして1959年に日本シリーズで4連勝して日本一に。御堂筋パレードが大いに盛り上がったのは言うまでもない。
野球。スポーツはいつだって奥深い。
誰もがプロになれるわけではない。それでも。
学生時代のスポーツ経験は私たちの人間力を磨いてくれる。
競争。その波から逃れることは不可能なのかも…。
大切なこと。それはいつだって自分自身。
昨日より今日。今日より明日。
きっとその積み重ねが。良い未来に繋がるのだから。
2 | "Ariana Grande returns"
Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Or so hopes Ariana Grande. The pop star released six albums in the seven years to 2020. Her fans have had to wait another four for her seventh album, "Eternal Sunshine", released on Friday. Ms Grande recorded it during the recent Hollywood strikes, which paused the filming of "Wicked", a pair of musical films in which she stars.
There has been no spate of singles, nor have previews been made available to critics. Ms Grande wants her fans to "experience" the album for the first time in its entirely. She has released only one song, with the charateristically insouciant title of "Yes, And?". The house-music bop soared right to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Sources at her record company. Republic Records, have promised more of the same on the album.
Ariana Grande氏。日本好きとして知られる彼女。
そんな彼女が繰り出す久しぶりのアルバム。
凄い売り上げになるかも…(驚)
海外の方が日本を好きでいてくれること。
それはとても光栄なことなのかもしれないね。

On Friday Viktor Orban, HUngary's prime minister, will meet Donald Trump at his estate in Florida, Mar-a-Lago. He is not planning to stop in Washington to meet the president, Joe Biden. Mr Orban believes that he and Mr Trump are at the vanguard of an international alliance against globalism. Both of them espouse a virulent new style of conservatism based on nationalism, opposition to international migration and the view that woke ideas are taking over Western culture.
Mr Orban is isolated within the European Union and NATO because he tamples the rule of law in Hungary and staunchly opposes military aid to Ukraine. A Republican victory in America's presidential election would improve his standing. He is one of only a few international leaders who would welcome a win by Mr Trump in November. Many dread the prospect.
アメリカの動きはいつだって活発だね。
どうやら。今度の選挙は両者の争いになりそうだね。
誰が次期大統領なのか…。
バイデン氏が再選するのか。それとも…。
どちらが国民に価値を提供することが出来るのか…。

「人に気を遣うことは、自分の感性を磨くことだ」
人に気を遣うこと。日本人なら誰しも当てはまる可能性があるのかも…。
海外の人には。このような文化は無かったりする。
ゼミ時代。教授の専門はシェイクスピアだった。少人数。こじんまりとしたゼミ。たまに紅茶とかを飲んだりしながら。ゼミ生同士で知見を深めあった。『マクベス』それが共通の題材だった。毎週。原文を読んでは英訳。その繰り返し。単調な作業。それでも。そんな日々が僕には愛おしかった。
その昔。英語は今ほどの地位は無く。フランス語が主たる言語だった。今でも。国連の基本言語は英語とフランス語だけど(笑)
フランス語は高校時代に少し習った。『レ・ミゼラブル』フランス革命を題材としたミュージカル。今でも印象に残っている。大学時代は中国語の勉強に明け暮れた。まだ中国語の資格は何も持っていないけど。「きっとまだまだ上達できる」そう信じている。
文化の違い。それは時に大きいものだけど。
違いがあるからこそ。見える世界もきっとある。
殺陣のシーンになると、現場の空気が震えた。決して大きくないその体躯が躍動し、他の俳優の存在を忘れるほどに目を奪う。多くの時代劇で共演したせんだみつおが語る。「初めて旦那の立ち回りを見たときには、流れるような身のこなしに完全に圧倒されました。吐く息、吸う息まですべてが計算しつくされていた」
豪快な演技とは対照的に、細やかな配慮を忘れない人だった。
「粋な江戸っ子で、決して威張ることはなかった。僕が『トラック野郎』シリーズに出ることになったときは、『監督に持って行きなさい』と、一升瓶の日本酒を持たせてくれた。しかも『萬屋です。せんだみつおをよろしくお願いいたします』という手紙付き。横で見ていたクニさん(田中放衛)が、『錦兄ィ、そこまですることないよ』と怒っていましたよ」
気を遣わない人間は感性が磨かれない。真の豪快さの裏には細やかな心があるのだ。
気疲れという言葉がある。現代においては。
割とよくある現象なのではないだろうか。
最近『指輪物語』を読み始めている。かなり長い作品。根気よく読み進める必要がある。けれど。きっとリハビリには丁度良い。
2 | Baseball against the odds in Cuba
Cuba's national baseball competition starts its 63rd season on Saturday. That the 75-game, 16-team series is going ahead at all is testimony to the sport's popularity among the island's 11.2m people and the big diaspora in the United States. In February the Cuban authorities announced a ban on all sporting events, citing fuel shortages that would prevent players and fans from travelling. An exception appears to have been quietly made for the tournament.
The fuel scarcity is part of a severe economic crisis that stems from years of mismanagement under Communist rule. Local industry is sputtering and the government lacks the foreign reserves to import goods from abroad; there is even a shortage of bread. These dire conditions will cast a shadow over the contest: the authorities have told areas hosting the series to look for sponsors to cover the costs of basic equipment including balls and bats. Still, baseball-mad Cubans will welcome any light relief.
WBCでの熱気がつい昨日のように感じる。きっと色々と弊害はあるのだろう。それでも。多くの国同士が集まり…競い合う。それはとても魅力的なことであるように感じる。違う言語。違う文化。異なるバックグラウンドを持った選手たち。彼らが野球という1つのスポーツに対して。真剣に向き合う。一瞬の攻防。より質の高い練習を。多くこなした者が勝つ。
勝負の世界は非情。だからこそ面白い。

As Taylor Swift ends the Asian leg of her Eras tour in Singapore on Saturday, she leaves a trail of grumbling politicians in her wake. After wondering why Ms Swift had not announced any dates in Thailand, Srettha Thavisin, the country's prime minister, said he discovered an exclusively deal between the superstar and Singapore's government. Swifties across South-East Asia were outraged. One lawmaker from the Philippines, arguably home to the region's largest fanbase, chided Singapore's unneighbourly behaviour.
Notwithstanding the bad blood, the city-state is advantageous for stars like Ms Swift. It has excellent infrastructure, political stability and strong rule of law. The Brazil leg of the Eras tour in Novemver, by contrast, was marred by two deaths, reports of muggings, a stampede and excessive heat. Yet leaders are eager for the billions in economic value that Ms Swift's concerts reportedly generate. With Thailand pledging to court A-list performers with their own special deals, and calls for Hong Kong to do the same, competition for Asian concert supremacy will only ramp up.
歌手の影響力は絶大だ。人気歌手となれば尚のこと。人気を得る。きっとそれは地道な努力の積み重ねなのだろう。
私が好きな歌手の一例として。YOASOBIさんが挙げられる。先日放送されたNHKスペシャル。特集が組まれていた。コンポーザーのAyaseさん。かなり苦労されたみたい…。転機となったのはボーカロイド。ネット社会。色々と是非はあるけど。もしかすると。クリエイターにとっては。良い環境なのかもしれない。

これが案外難しい…(笑)。結局のところ。
「当たり前のことを当たり前のように行う事」
これが成功への近道なのかも。
「必要とあらば他者を頼る」もちろん。それも大切。それでも。
まずは自分自身に目を向けてみる。昨日より今日。今日より明日。
成長出来ているのか。

『魔法使いの夜』というビジュアルノベルがある。作者は奈須きのこさん。あらすじは下記の通り。
坂の上のお屋敷には、二人の魔女が住んでいる
1980年後半。華やかさと活力に満ちた時代の黄昏時。
都会に下りてきた少年は、現代に生きる二人の魔女とすれ違う。
少年はごく自然に暮らしてきて、彼女は凛々しく胸を張って、少女は眠るように隠れ住んで。
三者三様の星の巡り。交わることなんてもってのほか。
何もかも違う三人の共同生活が始まるのは、あと、もうちょっと先の話。
草十郎。それが少年の名前である。
彼はその生涯のほとんどを山で過ごしてきた。
彼から見る景色。それは本当に独特なものだけど。
だからこそ。その個性に価値がある。
一方で。2人のヒロイン。彼女たちの世界もまた。非常に個性的である。
"隠ぺい"。それが彼女たちに課せられた義務である。
このルールと各々がどう向き合うのか。
それが魔術師としての責務。

『魔法使いの夜』。その終盤において。彼は告げられる。
「たとえあなたの行いを誰も見ていなかったとしても。
あなた自身が。その観測者だ」
見られている意識というもの。それは人が成長するきっかけとなる。
少しずつ頑張る。そしてそれを繰り返す。
物事は突き詰めると。いつだってシンプルだ。
坂上は、鹿児島のロケ現場に付き人やマネージャーもつけず一人で現れた。誰かが荷物を持とうとしても、『自分のことはやりますから』と固辞する。現場にいた片岡鶴太郎は、「これだけの大御所なのに…」と驚いたという。「幼い頃からのファンだったので、坂上さんのコントや芸のことを色々聞こうと思っていました。撮影が終わって、市内のカラオケにご一緒し、そこで話を聞こうと思ったのに、坂上さんがなかなかマイクを離さない。あまりにもお上手なので、感心して聞き入っていると、ボソッと『もともとは歌手になるつもりで東京に出てきたんだ』とおっしゃいました」
それ以上、坂上はなにも話さなかった。歌手を目指して上京したものの、コメディアンとして長い下積み生活をしてきた。夢破れ、長く苦労した時間があるからこそ、その芸にはにじみ出る哀愁があった。明るいステージと暗い楽屋裏。二つの世界が人を育てるのだ。
僕の幼い頃の夢。「プロ野球選手になること」その夢は叶いそうにない(笑)
それでも。野球部としての経験。それが無駄になるとは思わない。プロは厳しい世界。誰しもがプロ野球選手になれるわけではない。
今年で28歳。あともう少しで30代。気を引き締める必要があるのかも…。
今の努力が報われるのは10年後かもしれない。
それでも。きっとその積み重ねは武器になる。
何度も挑戦すること。それが僕たちの長所なのだから。
2 | The growing popularity of South Asian Music
This weekend the Southbank Centre in London is filled with the sounds of the sitar, sarod and tabla. At South Asian Sounds, a festival that reaches its climax on Sunday, some of the region's finest musicians take centre stage. The programme spans several genres, from Indian classical music and folk song to experimental Jazz.
London is a fitting location for such a celebration: around 20% of the city's residents have South Asian heritage. Yet the festival also points to a growing global audience for the region's music. Last year Diljit Dosanjh became the first Indian artist to perform at Coachella, an American music festival. In 2022 "Pasoori", a song by Ali Sethi, a Pakistani-American musician, and Shae Gill, a Pakistani singer, became the most-searched track in the world after it featured in "Ms Marvel", a TV show. Western artists still dominate the global music industry. But South Asians are finding a place on the playlist.

In 2020 "Parasite", a South Korean film, became the first foreign-language feature to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, breaking what its director, Bong Joon-ho, called the "one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles". Every year since, an international, foreign-language title has been nominated for the top prize. This year, for the first time, there are two. "Anatomy of a Fall" (France) and "The Zone of Interest" (Britain/Poland). "Past Lives", an American production chiefly in Korean, is also on the shortlist. Another first: not one nominee in the documentary category is American.
The increasingly international character of the Oscars reflects the Academy's efforts to become more diverse and global. In 2015 a hashtag #OscarsSoWhite , drew attention to its predominantly white membership. The share of members from underrepresented races and ethnicities has since doubled. The body's international membership has risen to around 20%. "Oppenheimer" is odds-on to win Best Picture. But whoever takes home Hollywood's holy grail, international cinema has already won.

僕はそう信じている。

「どっちが悪いんだ！ちゃんと筋を通してはっきりせえ」
筋を通すこと。それは想像以上に難しい。
渡瀬は「スター渡哲也の弟」というレッテルに苦しんできた。積極的にヤクザ、不良、アウトローの役に体当たりで挑んだのも、役者として兄と違う道を進むためだった。俳優の井上茂は、渡瀬が面倒を見ていた脇役や斬られ役の役者集団「ピラニア軍団」で世話になっていたことがある。
「私もタレントのゆうき哲也の弟なので、そう自己紹介すると、渡瀬さんは『それは、違う。あなたは誰かの弟ではなく、あなた自身でしょ』と諭してくれた。ピラニア軍団はいつも渡瀬さんのマンションに集まって、飲んだり食べたりしていましたね。酔っぱらって、喧嘩が始まることもしょっちゅう。渡瀬さんはひとり静かに飲んでいるのですが、いよいよ殴り合いになると『筋を通してはっきりせえ』と間を取り持ってくれました」
兄貴や誰かのせいにしないで、自分の人生は自分で背負え。そんな渡瀬の声が聞こえる。
1度きりの人生。解釈次第で世界は変わる。

Globalisation's middlemen have had a testing start to 2024. Low waters stalled freighters trying to pass through the Panama Canel. Attacks by the Houthis, an Iran-backed Yemeni militia, on ships in the Red Sea shook global trade. The IMF reports that volumes shipped via the Suez Canal - which normally serves around 15% of maritime trade - fell by half in January and February compared with a year earlier. Most have been redirected around southern Africa.
DP World's results on Thursday may indicate how these disruptions are affecting global trade. The state-owned Emirati firm operates posts in roughly 40 countries. In January its boss, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, seemed unconcerned about the Houthis' attacks. "I don't see this going on long term," he said. Two months later the Red Sea shows no sign on returning to normal. With container lines complaining of congestion at ports in Europe and Asia, Mr bin Sulayem will hope to reassure customers that DP World can weather the storm.

Since the launch of the Saudi-funded LIV Tour two years ago, men's golf has been soaked in money. LIV offered enormous salaries to some of the world's best players to persuade them to defect from America's prestigious PGA Tour. Those offers continue to lure them. Tynell Hatton, an English player, moved to LIV in January for a reperted sum of at least $60m.
The PGA Tour responded by jacking up the prize money at its own events. This year's Players Championship at Sawgrass in FLorida, which begins on Thursday, carries a total purse of $25m, making it more lucrative than any of the four majors. When Emmanuel Macron, France's president, visits Berlin on Friday he will attempt to mend fences with Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor. The pair differ in temperament and political instinct - and in recent weeks they have also disgraced over the war in Ukraine.
Taking the Germans by surprise, at the end of February Mr Macron publicly mused that Western countries might send ground troops to Ukraine. Mr Scholz immediately rejected the idea. German officials were especially irritated by such hawkish talk as France has provided only €635m ($693m) in millitary aid to Ukraine, while Germany has delivered or promised €17.7bn , calculates the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (figures the French government contests). Messrs Macron and Scholz will later be joined by Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister, for a meeting of the Weimar Triangle, a geopolitical forum born in 1991 after the end of the cold war. Poland and Germany are particularly keen to resuscitate it.

On Friday voting begins in Russia's presidential election. The result is not in doubt: Vladimir Putin will win another six-year term. He controls the media and has closed civil-society groups. (Golos, Russia's only independent election-monitoring organisation, has been designated a "foreign agent".) Opposition figures have been silenced, imprisoned and killed. Boris Nadezhdin, an anti-war politician, collected enough signatures to gain a place on the ballot, but was banned from standing. On February 16th Alexei Navalny, Russia's most prominet opposition leader, died in the Siberian penal colony where he was incarcerated on spurious charges.
In that context, holding the vote may seem pointless. But the exercise is important to Mr Putin. His rule relies on carefully mantaining the appearance of popular support. The election is a ritualistic expression of that approval. It will embolden the president to continue his war in Ukraine and his campaign of repression at home.

India's festival of democracy, as its elections are often called, begins on April 19th. But for some Indians the more important festival begins this Friday. That is when the Chennai Super Kings take on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to start off the latest Indian Premier League season. The 17th edition of the world's most lucrative domestic cricket contest has had to adjust to voting dates, but that will not put fans off.
Last year's edition broke viewing records. This year Tata Group, a conglomerate, forked out a record 25bn rupees ($300m) to renew its sponsorship. At an auction ahead of the tournament teams spent around 2.3bn rupees on player purchases. Kolkata Knight Riders paid a record 250m rupees for Mitchell Starc, an Australian fast bowler. Still, KKR are not the bookies' choice to win the league. They favour CSK, the defending champions, and the Mumbai Indians. But unlike the elections, which the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party will probably win with ease, the IPL will be a close contest.

After he was booted off Twitter (now X) and Facebook after the Capitol riot of January 6th 2021, Donald Trump started his own social-media platform. Truth Social was to be a home for "censored" voices, although it never took off beyond the MAGA crowd. It also loses money hand over fist. Regardless, it is now poised to go public. On Friday investors in a special-purpose acquisition company - essentially a listed pot of capitol - will vote on whether to merge with Truth Social's parent company. The combined entity will have a market capitalisation of about $6.3bn.
Wonderful news for Mr Trump, whose stake will be worth $4.1bn. The paper windfall will be of no help in his current predicament, however, since he cannot sell his shares for six months. By March 25th he must secure a bond for half-a-billion dollars to satisfy a judgement in his civil-fraud trial. No bond company will step up since he lacks enough cash as collateral. So he is begging an appeals court to reduce the bond.

Ivan Reitman's supernatural comedy, "Ghostbusters", was among the highest grossing films of 1984. Five years later, "Ghostbusters Ⅱ" proved less successful and a reboot, also called "Ghostbusters", suffered a painful death at the box office in 2016. Jason Reitman, the son of the director of the first two films, had a little more luck in 2021. In "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" the survivng original team members - played by bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd ad Ernie Hudson - passed the proton packs to a younger group of paranormal investigators played by Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon and others.
Now Mr Reitman has co-written and produced another sequel, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire". It captures the rowdy spirit of the 1984 classic but tries to squeeze in Ghostbusters both old and new, along with a crowd of supporting characters. That does not leave much room for laughs or scares - or ghosts. After 40 years, it might finally be time to let the franchise rest in peace.

On Saturday, between 8.30 and 9.30pm local time around the world, lights will go out. That, at least, is the hope of the World Wildlife Fund, a charity which organises an annual "Earth Hour". The action is more symbolic than practical: using figures for 2021, a crude calculation suggests that knocking out all of the world's electricity for one hour would reduce consuption bu about three terawatt-hours cutting carbon emissions by at most 1.7 megatons (about 0.004% of the annual total). And emissions from global electricity use have grown steadily since the first Earth Hour in 2007, reaching their highest level in 2023.
But some things are heading in the right direction. The amount of new electricity demand met using renewable sources was almost 50% higher in 2023 than in 2022. The trend looks set to continue: in November governments at COP28 pledged to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 ( from 2022 levels).

Slovaks choose their new president on Saturday. Ivan Korcok, a pro-Western former diplomat, and Peter Pelligrini, a close ally of the populist prime minister, Robert Fico, are expected to progress to the second round on April 6th. Since his return to power in October, Mr Fico has attacked independent institutions. The liberal outgoing president, Zuzana Caputova, mangaed to hold off his attempts to soften anti-corruption laws. But Mr Pelligrini, a former member of Mr Fico's Smer party, would be more amenable.
The election will also test Slovakia's support for Ukraine. Mr Fico ended millitary aid in October and has drawn closer to Russia. Earlier this month, the Czech Republic, historically Slovakia's ally, suspended intergovernmental consultations after the Slovak foreign minister met up with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov. Only 40% of Slovaks believe that Russia is primarily responsible for the war, 34% blame the West. Unlike Hungary, though, Slovakia has not unblocked EU or NATO decisions related to Ukraine - yet.

The head of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, who this month won crucial European backing for a second term, will attend the China Development Forum, a forum for foreign investors and businessmen, in Beijing on Sunday. The fund and China agree on some things, including the dangers of trade wars and decoupling (which the IMF calls "geoeconomic fragmentation"). But Ms Georgieva may still have some frank advice for ger hosts. To boost growth, the IMF thinks China should cut interest rates (even if that entails a cheaper yuan) and redirect its stimulus spending from public investment to the social safety-net. It should also be more decesive in cleaning up the debts of property developers, local governments and distressed sovereign borrowers like Sri Lanka and Zambia.
Some foreigners think the fund should be even together on China. They want it to express alarm about the country's growing trade surpluses, especially in elctric vehicles, which threaten rival manufactures around the world.

2 | Senegal's long-awaited election
Little more than a month ago Senegal was in the midst of a constitutional crisis. Macky Sall, the departing president, had tried to delay elections by ten months. His most popular rival was behind bars and disqualified from running. Security forces were beating and arresting protesters. Many feared that a country widely seen as a bulwark of stability in the region was now going the same way as all those others beset by bloody coups and overstaying presidents.
So it is with relief that citizens of one of Africa's most vibrant democracies finally go to the polls on Sunday. Senegal's constitutional court slapped down Mr Sall's bid to postpone them, and his opponents have since been released from prison. Of the 19 contenders now on the ballot at least three are real contenders to succeed Mr Sall, who is not running. A vote many feared might not happen is instead set to be a nail-biter.

3 | NFL franchises are too big to buy
NFL American football teams are the most valuable sports clubs on the planet. According to Sportico, a sports analysis company, 12 of the top 20 belong to the league. Their success in selling out stadiums and attracting the biggest sports broadcasting deal in history has made NFL owners extraordinarily rich. But it has also created a big problem. So valuable are the NFL franchises that it has become very difficult to find anyone with deep enough pockets to buy them.
At the owners' latest pow-wow, which begins on Saturday in Florida, loosening the league's strict investment rules (the lead owner needs to control at least 30%, among over stipulations) could thus be up for discussion. In 2022 the National Basketball Association relaxed its rules to permit private-equity firms to buy up to 20% of a team and sovereign wealth funds to own up to 5%. The NFL is unlikely to go so far immediately, but the sale of passive stakes to local investors is increasingly likely in the long run.

4 | Intermittent fasting may strain the heart
Intermittent fasting is a broad church. Its practitioners range from occasional breakfast-skippers to committed clock-watchers, who proselytise the diet's weight-loss benefits. In fairness, some studies have backed these claims - but only with respect to short-term effects. Now, the first oong-term study of intermittent fasting has cast doubt on its supposed health-giving qualities.
The study, by a Chinese team and presented at a conference of the American Heart Association, analysed data from 20,000 Amercan adults over a median of eight years. It found that those who reported eating only within an eight-hour daily window had a 91% higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease.
The reaserach, however, has not been peer reviewed and did not investigate why restricted mealtimes might contribute to worse heart health. This omission, among other limitations, means that the study is unlikely to bring any hardcore fasters to the breakfast table. For now then, intermittent fasting will remain the subject of (early) dinnertime debates.

Few parts of America's economy have baffled economists as much as the property sector over the past few years. Housing prices should in theory be very sensitive to interest-rate increases - expensive mortgages reduce housing demand, causing prices to fall. Yet since the Federal Reserve began tightening monetary policy in 2022, house prices have risen. According to the Federal Housing Finance Agency, a regulator, they increased by 6.6% year on year in December. The figures for January, due on Tuesday, will probably show another rise.
The reason is that American homebuyers typically obtain fixed-rate mortgages for 30 years, so few are willing to give them up when rates increase, leading to a drop in supply. Home sales last year fell to the lowest levels since 1995. A fall in mortgage rates has recently revived the market: sales rose by 9.5% year - on - year in February. But if demand continues to outstrip supply - as the National Association of Realtors, an industry body, says it does - house prices will probably remain relatively robust.

The French government is bracing for bad news on Tuesday. Insee, the official statistics body, will publish figures expected to show that the country's budget deficit reached well over 5% of GDP in 2023. The government's official target was 4.9%. This makes France one of the countries with the largest deficit, relative to its income, in the euro zone. Pierre Moscovici, head of the Cour des Comptes, the French national auditor, calls the problem "very preoccupying".
Bruno Le Maire, the finance minister, has promised to bring the deficit down to below 3%, in line with euro zone rules, by 2027. He has pledged an extra €10bn of budget savings. But up until now there has been little attempt to curb public spending in France, and revenues have diminished amid sluggish growth. Mr Moscovici nonetheless argues that France has no problem raising money on the markets and that its level of public debt, while high, remains sustainable. The ratings agencies will certainly be watching closely.

On Tuesday America's Supreme Court hears a case that could lead to a clampdown on access to miferpristone, a pill that induces nearly two-thirds of abortions in America. It is the court's first foray into reproductive law since it ended the constitutional right to abortion in 2022.
Last year anti-abortion campaigners presuaded a lower court to de-authorise the FDA's approval of mifepristone in 2000. An appeals court pared back that radical move but blocked changes made by the FDA in 2016 and 2021 that allowed women to use the drug later in pregnancy (up to ten weeks), to ask for a remote prescription and to receive the drug by mail.
The anti-mifepristone challengers want the Supreme Court to uphold the appeals court's ruling. They say that the FDA's decisions were based on "piecemeal analysis" of scant data. The FDA says they are justified by the drug's exceptional safety record. It also says that the plaintiffs who brought the case to the lower court had not suffered the "concrete injury" required for legal-standing - the right to bring a case in the first place.

4 | Revolutionary roads
"Revolution" means two things: a jolting move forward, and a circular retreat. These motions shape history, writes Fareed Zakaria, a journalist and broadcaster, in "Age of Revolutions: Progress and Backlash from 1600 to the Present", published on Tuesday. Advances are followed by efforts to undo progress.
Mr Zakaria posits that "our times are revolutionary". Conventional wisdom seems increasingly unconventional; politics is becoming less predictable. We are in a phase of backlash. Mr Zakaria looks to revolutions (loosely defined) that delivered durable progress. They include the birth of modern liberalism in the Dutch golden age during the 16th and 17th centuries; England's Glorious Revolution of 1688, after which the country emerged as a stable modern state; and the Industrial Revolution. He argues these were "bottom up" - going with the social grain.
In this year of elections, readers might be keen to learn how to preserve progress and limit backlash. Mr Zakaria resists prescription, perhaps because his terms are too loosely defined to withstand much scrutiny.

5 | Israel's ultra-Orthodox conscription row
On Tuesday Israel's cabinet is set to table controversial legislation that would make religious students exempt from military service. Those attending yeshivas (seminaries) have long not had to sign up, but the arrangement was never codified. In 1998 it was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, and the government has relied on repeatedly extending the original regulation ever since.
The number of exempt students has soared from 400 originally to 66,000. The Supreme Court recently ruled that they will become liable for conscription, or government funding for their seminaries will be cut. Binyamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, has promised ultra-Orthodox parties - a key element of his coalition - that he will stop this happening and make the exemption law.
But other government members, including the defence minister, are adamantly opposed to the exemption, especially while Israel is at war and hundreds of thousands of reservists have been mobilised. Whichever way he twists, Mr Netanyahu could end up losing parts of his majority coalition and perhaps even his government.
