【イギリス留学#18】グループワークの難しさ
週が明けてまた今日から授業が始まります。相変わらずしんどい授業なので、その様子を書いていきたいと思います。今日は特にグループワークって難しいなって思った日でした。
ちなみに今日のカバー画像(サムネイル)は、土曜日に行ったHexhamの写真です。電話ボックスや、英語の標識が何となくかっこいいです。

今日の午前中は特に予定がなかったので、卒論を書くために図書館に行きました。自分が借りたい本を探すために、この本棚をぐるぐる回して動かす必要があったのですが、動かし方が分からず結構大変でした。
Energy and the environment
Introduction
今回の授業の最初は4つの簡単な質問に対して、グループで話し合って解答を考えるという時間でした。質問と僕たちのグループが考えた解答はこんな感じです。僕たちが考えたものなので、間違ってても許してください。
①What is energy?
→Power to generate electric
②What is the environment?
→state of where we live
ex)weather/nature/ground/sky classroom/natural surroundings
③How many related words can you think of?
→solar power/wind power/water power = eco system
④Why is this an important topic?
→Because today cause global warming. We must think how to protect earth.
There is a lot of pollution on the earth. Human need protect environment and energy saving.
Essay option1
次にEssayを読んで質問に答えていきます。グループが4つあるので、1～4の問題の中で1つの問題の答えを話し合って考えていきます。僕たちのグループは③の答えを考えます。
The UK is facing an unprecedented energy crisis, with demand for energy likely to considerably exceed supply. This could lead to a deficit of energy around the country. Using research, examine this situation and any consequent problems. Identify and evaluate possible solutions and say which might be best and why.
①What does unprecedented mean? What is a crisis?
②What is 'demand' and 'supply'? What happens if demand exceeds supply?
③What is a deficit of energy? How would this affect the UK?
④What is a 'solution'? What does it mean to 'evaluate possible solution’?
unprecedented/deficitなど知らない単語が出てきたので、不安になりましたが、知らない単語の意味を文脈から考えるという問題なので、全然大丈夫でした。それよりもグループワークが結構大変です。
日本にいる時はグループワークが苦手という訳でもなかったのですが、やはり英語になると周りの人の言っていることが聞きとれないし、咄嗟に言いたいことが英語に出来ないし、本当に難しいです。
とりあえず僕達のグループはこのような解答になりました。
defisitはlackやnot enoughという意味に近いと思います。
Defisit of energy is lack of fuel such as petroleum, fossil energy.
Winter is very cold because lack of fuel in UK.
Essay option2
次も同じようにEssayを読んで質問に答えていきます。今回も僕たちの班は③の答えを考えていきます。
In the UK the concept of environmentally friendly or 'green' business practice, which does not deplete natural resources, is becoming more significant. Using research, and focusing on the UK, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this development.
①What is a 'concept'? What does it mean if a concept becomes more 'significant'?
②What is 'business practice'? What does it mean if business practice is 'Environmentally friendly, or green'?
③What are 'natural resources'? What does it mean if they are 'depleted'?
④What are 'advantages' and 'disadvantages'? What might a business see as an advantage or disadvantage?
グループワークはやはり難しいです。文章をじっくり読んで自分なりに考えても、他の人が話し出すと「あれ、俺が考えてたこと間違ってた？」って思えてきて、自分の考えがまとまらなくなります。
また自分が話す前に他の人が話していた内容と、自分の考えている意見が被ることがあります。でも日本語みたいに同じこと言ってるけど、言い方変えて補足っぽくするという技が使えません。
グループの中で作業を分担して進める時間もあるのですが「分担してたはずなのに完全に別の作業してないか？」ってなる時があります。でもそんな時に「これ今どういう作業？」って擦り合わせが上手くできません。
そんなゴールにちゃんと向かっているのか分からない状態で、ダラダラと進めてしまうことがよくあります。本当に擦り合わせきちんとしておくことって大事なんだなと実感しました。
Research Questions
次に先ほど読んだ2つのEssayから1つを選んで、それを選んだ理由とそのEssayに対する質問を考えていきます。僕はoption2の方を選びました。これを選んだ理由はこちらです。
I chose option 2 because I believe that natural resources will become limited in the future. Therefore, we must consider how to use ecosystems.
そして質問はこういったものを考えました。これを提出して今日の授業は終了となります。
1.How does company do green business?
2.When did the UK set up the concept of environmentally friendly?
3.When was it becoming more significant?
4.Why is this a particularly important issue in the UK?
5.What does "environmentally friendly" mean?
おわりに
本当に英語の授業は疲れます。日本語なら多少集中力が切れていてもある程度何を言っているのか分かりますが、英語だと集中して聞かなければ分かりません。なんなら集中しても分からない時もあります。
でも楽しいこともあるので、引き続き頑張っていきたいと思います。

英語力向上のために留学期間中は英語日記を書いています。英語で話した内容などを書くことが多いです。まだまだ英語力が乏しいですが、暖かい目で読んでください。※Chat-GPTで修正はしています。
When I want to add something, I should say ”I have the same idea with him. Just to add…”. I plan to use this phrase.
Today, I went to the Global Cafe with my Myanmar neighbor and my Japanese friend. I met my Myanmar neighbor's friend for the first time, and we had a great conversation. We had deep discussions that only men can do it.
Later, we played a game called "Truth or Dare" In this game, you spin a bottle, and the person the bottle points to must choose either "truth" or "dare" If they choose "truth" they have to answer any question honestly; if they choose "dare" they must perform a requested action.
The bottle tip pointed me, so I choice "dare". Then I had to exchange Instagram acount with a beautiful Chinese woman. But It turned out to be a lucky event for me. I asked "Can I exchange Instagram acount?" she replyed with a smile "Yes! of course" Today was a fortune day.
