【イギリス留学#35】移住について考える
今日の授業の大きなテーマは移住についてでした。やはり留学に来ると「この国に住んだらどうなるのか」と考えることは多いです。またテストの説明などもされたので、そういったことについて書いていきます。
ちなみに今日のカバー画像(サムネイル)は、夜に行ったTHE GLOBEという音楽を聴けるパブみたいなところの写真です。ジャズを嗜みました。

#34にも書いたように、英語の授業内容を完全に日本語に翻訳してしまうと、英語脳になることができないと考えているので、今回の投稿では少しだけ英単語などを日本語に翻訳せずに書いていきます。
僕は無駄に横文字を使いたがる人があまり好きではないので、自分の投稿は出来るだけ日本語を使ってきました。でも留学期間中だけは、そういった投稿をしてみようかなと思ってます。とりあえず一旦試してみます。

今回の授業はWhy do people migrate?という質問から始まりました。その質問の答えを出来るだけ沢山グループで考えて発表したので、他のグループの意見も合わせて載せておきます。

意見を出した後に先生からIf you could live in any country, where would you live?という質問がありました。しかし、大体の人がI want to stay in my hometown.と解答しました。
Listening
続いて移住に関するリスニングの問題がありました。英語の音声を聞く前に意味が分からない単語は、グループ内で意味を考えることになりました。僕のグループではmajorityという単語が分からない人がいました。
僕は大きな円を書いて、その円の中にそこそこ大きめの円と小さめの円を書いて、大きめの円がmajorityで小さめの円がminorityだと説明しました。でも上手く伝わらなかったかもしれません。
もっと例えを用いて説明すれば良かったと思います。例えば ’English speaker is majority in the world. But Japanese speaker is minority in the world.’ などと言ってみた方が伝わったかも知れません。
ちなみに英英辞書で調べてみると、このように出てきました。
majority : the larger number or part of something
minority : a smaller number or part
Push factors/Pull factors
ここからmigrationが起こる理由について、自分の国を基に考えてみます。ただその前に移住に関する英単語について、リスニングの問題に絡めて説明がありました。こちらです。
Migration can be:
･forced or voluntary
･domestic or international
Emigration＝out of a country
Immigration＝into a country
Push factors - cause emigration
Pull factors - attract immigration
→ economic/sociental/environmental
Exact reason(s) for migration typically combination of push and pull factors.
(for both: economic factors usually most important)
New migrants may face language barrier; discrimination
そしてPush factors(from Japan)/Pull factors(to the UK)をEconomic/
Societal/Environmentalという3点から考えてみました。あくまで僕の考えなので、間違ってたらすみません。
【Push factors(from Japan)】
･Economic
Japanese economy don't grow for 30 years.
law salary
･Societal
hard to raise children
a falling birth rate and an aging population
･Environmental
Japan has only Japanese people so everyone can speak only Japanese.
【Pull factors(to the UK)】
･Economic
→high salarys
･Societal
→The UK has Free hospital
･Environmental
→The UK has a lot of nationalities to learn various culture.
Seminar Exam
続いてテストの説明がありました。スピーキングのテストは個人で受けるテストとグループで受けるテストの2つあるのですが、今日は特にグループで受けるテストについて説明されました。
Seminar Exam Task recap - what do you have to do?
1.Interlocutor introduces part 1 task
2.Students have 3 minutes (3 students) / 4 minutes (4 students) to discuss pre-discussion question
3.Interlocutor reads the situation & task for part 2 aloud and students read along silently
4.Students have 7 minutes to prepare, using English - English dictionaries and making notes if necessary
5.Students have 6 minutes (3 students) / 8 minutes (4 students)
discuss the cases and come to a final agreement
最大で8分間会話を続ける必要があるので、先生からHow can you keep a conversation going?という質問があり、グループで考えました。ちなみに先生の正解は以下の4つです。

respond(agree/disagree)
reaction(nod/eyecontact)
Discussion
続いて実際にDiscussionをしてみます。What reasons do people emigrate to difficult country?という質問に対する解答を考えたり、以下のファイルを開いて、書かれている課題に取り組んだりしました。
また以下の質問にもグループで解答を考えました。自分の国の魅力を考えたり、移住したい国を考えるのは身近なテーマなので、割と考えやすかった気がします。

Have you always lived in the same city?
おわりに
今日の授業で移住について考えましたが、今の僕はイギリスには移住しないと思います。イギリスに来て日本の最低限の水準が高いことに気づきました。治安が良かったり、街が綺麗だったり、ご飯が美味しかったりします。
イギリスって教育のレベルが高いとか本場のサッカーを見れるとか色々魅力はあると思いますが、それって高次欲求な気がします。日本の高い最低限の水準に常に触れていると、意外と気づかないものです。
しかし、そもそも今の自分では英語を話すことができないので、イギリスでは今まで日本で培ってきた能力は何の役にも立たないし、当然仕事がありません。せめて海外移住を選択肢に入れられるようになってみたいです。

英語日記
英語力向上のために留学期間中は英語日記を書いています。英語で話した内容などを書くことが多いです。まだまだ英語力が乏しいですが、暖かい目で読んでください。※Chat-GPTで修正はしています。
In break time, I talked to my Chinese friend about migration. Japan faces a big probrem, which is a falling birth rate and an aging population. He asked me "Why does it happen? Don't Japanese people want to get married?" I replied "I think not. Many Japanese people want to get married, but it is difficult to raise children. Japan has few nurseries and kindergartens, and teacher's salary are very law." He understood,and I asked "How about China?" He replied "China has many kindergartens and nursery schools. They are also located in the neighbourhood. However, many Chinese people don't want to get married." It is an odd fact.
By the way, he really enjoys making Gundam plastic models. He has many of them on display in the living room.
Today, I went to THE GLOBE. I wanted to listen to the music for free, which students played. However, I misunderstood the event details. I listened to an old man's performance for 7 pounds. But it was good music!
