Hello everyone, welcome to today’s episode of my podcast! This podcast is about my daily life in Brisbane, Australia as a native Japanese-speaking learner of English. This podcast is bilingual, using both English and Japanese.

Okay, so let's move on to today's episode.
Do you read regulary? I do. I started counting the books I read this year since this April. So far, it will be around 120. If you heard the number, you may be impressed. However, it is not so difficult as I have read including children books. Recently, I finished reading a book written by Roald Dahl who is one of the best known authors all over the world. （I will explain about him later in this episode)
I love reading children's books because it always gives me some insights.
So in today's episode, I would like to introduce the BFG and talk about my insights from the book. Hope you enjoy it.
さて、今日も本題に入っていきたいと思います。
みなさんはよく本を読まれますでしょうか？
私は、そうですねぇ結構読む方だと思います。
今年の4月から読んだ本を数え始めたんですが、今の所120冊くらい読んでいます。
こういうとものすごく本を読んでいるようですが、子供向けの本も入っているからだと思います。
最近、ロアルドダールさんの本を読みました。この方は世界中で有名な作家さんですね（後程、この方について説明させていただきます。）
私、児童書も好きなんですね。
というのも毎回、「ハッとさせられる」ことが書いてあるからなんです。
そんなわけで、今日は、最近読んだBFGという本とそこから得た気づきについてお話ししたいと思います。

Okay, so first of all, I would like to introduce Roald Dahl. He is one of the most well-known authors in the world. Even if you do not know his name, you may have heard the titles of his books such as Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and so on. According to my husband, some of his books are mandatory books to read when Australian kids are in primary school.
ではまず、作者のロアルドダールさんについてお話ししていきたいと思います。
この方は、世界中で有名な作家さんです。名前は知らなくても彼の本を知っている方は多いと思います。
（有名どころだと）マチルダは小さな大天才、チャーリーとチョコレート工場の作家さんです。
うちの旦那（オーストラリア人）によると、オーストラリアの子供たちは小学校の時に彼の本を課題図書として読むそうです。
I like his books because there are heaps of unreasonable things we will face when we become adults with full of humor. I mean Roald Dahl broke into the things even children can understand it.
私がロアルドダールさんの本が好きな理由は、大人になった時の理不尽さなどがユーモアを踏まえてたくさん描かれているからです。子供にとってもわかるように、噛み砕いた表現でそういった理不尽さが描かれているという感じでしょうか。
It would be difficult to imagine, so I will explain it based on the book I read. I read the BFG. It stands for Big Friendly Giant. This is a story between a big friendly giant and a girl named Sophie. The story starts with Sophie being taken by a giant and meeting BFG. In the end, they challenge to stop other evil giants from eating human being's kids.
といってもご想像がつかないかなと思いますので、今回読んだBFGという本を例に挙げて紹介させていただきます。BFGというのはBig Friendly Giantの略で やさしい巨人さんって感じでしょうか。
日本語訳だとオ・ヤサシ巨人BFGというタイトルだそうです。
このお話は、BFGとソフィーという女の子のお話です。
物語の初めに、ソフィーが何者かに攫われて、BFGと出逢います。最後は、悪者の巨人たちが人間の子供たちを食べるのを止めに行く！みたいなお話です。
Then, what was good about this book? Let me share my favourite quote in the book.
'Words’ , he said, 'is oh such a twitch-tickling problem to me all my life. So you must simply try to be patient and stop squibbling. As I am telling you before, I know exactly what words I am wanting to say, but somehow or other they is always getting squiff-squiddled around.' (The BFG)
さてここからは、この本のなにがよかったかについてお話をしたいと思います。
まず私のお気に入りの一節を紹介いたしますね。
「言葉」は本当にうぎゃー！ってむず痒くなるやつだなぁ。
オイラの人生ズーーートな。
ゆっくり最後まで聞くんだ。
「これは違う」「あれは違う」って言わないでな。
前にもいったがな、俺はなんて言いたいかわかってるんだ。
でもなんでだか他の奴らはイーツモ ぴーぴーわーわー言ってくるんだよ。
（これは私の意訳です。日本語訳の本当は違うと思いますがイメージを掴んでいただけたら嬉しいです）
Some of you already noticed that there are heaps of errors in the BFG's English. It seems like the BFG's English is reflective of English speaking small kids. There are heaps of errors and not perfect English including pronunciation as BFG always says "human beans" rather than "human beings".
もうお気づきの方もいると思うんですが、BFGは英語の言い間違いをたくさんするんです。
どうやら、BFGの英語って小さい子供がよくする言い間違いなど取り入れられてるらしいです。
たくさん文法などの間違いもあるし、発音なども含めて完璧な英語ではないんですよ。人間のことを"human beings"を"human beans"って言うんです。
（確かにこういうかわいい言い間違い子供多いですよね。トトロのめいちゃんの「トウモコロシ」みたいな感じでしょうか）
However, I couldn't agree more with what BFG said as a second language learner. Yeah, I like this book because it explains the feelings of second-language learners as well.
色々間違えはある英語なんですけど、私このBFGの言葉 首がもげるかと思うほど頷きました。
この本が好きな理由は、私のような第二言語学習者のもどかしさの気持ちを上手に表現しているなぁと思うからです。
Also, the quote shows me that people have a better ability to judge people who do not have the same extent. That is quite frustrating. However, as you can see, you could understand what the BFG intended to say 100%. So, I feel that adults judge people based on their ability or background and try to understand the person rather than comprehend their English. For example, some people have a tendency to point out English errors instead of listening to the speakers' opinion.
もう一つ先ほどの一説から学んだことがあります。
人って自分と同じように話せないとか 自分より能力が下だなって判断した時、すぐ見下したり、ジャッジしたりする感じしませんか？
私はこういうことされるの、あまりいい気持ちはしないですね。
そういう気持ちも表現されているのがこの本のいいところだと思います。
ただですね、みなさん。英語の間違いはあるけどBFGが意図していること100％分かりますよね？
この本を読んで思ったんですけど、大人って人を「なにができるか」とか、「バックグラウンド」（例えば学歴とか）で表面的な判断をする割に、その人が本当に言いたいことを（英語力がないとか、英語の間違いがあるとかで）きちんとわかってあげようとしない人がすごく多い
っていうメッセージが込められている気がするんです。
Anyway, the BFG showed me how scary human beans(human beings) are in real life. hahaI also need to have a passion to be understood as well as comprehended by others like BFG.
まぁこのBFGを通して学んだことは、BFGの言葉を借りると、
人間おまめ（Human Beans)てこわーいと言う話でした。ははは
とにかく私は、表面上の英語もきれいに理解していただけたり、BFGのように自分が意図することをしっかり理解していただけるような人間になりたいなぁと思ったのでした。

I was talking about the insight that I gained from the book I read recently.
In order to address the topic, I was talking to
1) Who is Roald Dahl?
He is the most well-known author all over the world. His famous books are, for example, Matilda and Chalie and the Chocolate Factory.
2) A brief introduction of the BFG
This is a story about an adventure between a Big friendly giant and a girl named Sophie.
3) The insight from the book.
Human beans tend to look at shallow parts of others such as their background and their ability rather than their human natures.
そんなわけで今日は最近読んだ児童書から得た学びについてお話しさせていただきました。
今日は大きく3つに分けてお話しさせていただきました。
1）ロアルドダールってどんな人？
世界的に有名な作家さんのお一人です。有名な本にはマチルダは小さな大天才、チャーリーとチョコレート工場などを書かれた方です。
2）最近読んだBFGってどんな本？
やさしい巨人BFGとソフィーという名の女の子のお話し
3）この本から得た気づき
人間おまめ（Human beans）って、バックグラウンドやその方のスキルなどの表面的なことを見がちで、他人の本質について見ようとしない
ということに気付かされたというお話でした
