How the Modern Last Samurai Roger Voltz became a Noh mask sculptor, Part 1

After graduating from the University of Paris, he completed his military service in the French army.

Roger Voltz, a Frenchman, came to Japan alone in 1973 to study martial arts, and has continued to practice martial arts, kobudo, and ancient martial arts for about 50 years to the present day, becoming one of the last modern samurai.

He also has a career spanning approximately 30 years as a Noh mask sculptor.

I asked him:
Why did you become a Noh mask sculptor?

Now that he told me the reason why, I would like to share his story with you.

(Marcel)

I came to Japan in 1973 to study martial arts and began learning karate and aikido.

While studying Okinawa-based karate, I also became interested in ancient martial arts, or kobudo.
