夏目漱石「趣味の遺伝」を英語で読んでみよう！

書店に行くと、洋書のコーナーを必ずチェックする。
こういう作家が英語に翻訳されて読まれているのか、と実感できるからだ。

流石に有名な文学者は多くの作品が翻訳されているが、
Soseki Natsume, " The Heredity of Taste"(夏目漱石、味の遺伝？？？)を見たとき、そんな作品あったかなぁ、という感じだった。

調べてみたら、新潮文庫の「倫敦塔・幻影の盾」に収められている「趣味の遺伝」であることが分かった。

「我輩は猫である」や「こころ」、「坊っちゃん」などは「常備」されているが、「趣味の遺伝」は珍しいから購入しておいた。

今回の記事は、
夏目漱石「趣味の遺伝」、
" Heredity of Taste "を日英対訳でお届けする。
テキストは、新潮文庫「倫敦塔・幻影の盾」p226、及び英訳は、
Soseki Natsume, " The Heredity of Taste" translated 
by Sammy I. Tsunematsu,
TUTTL CLASSICS, pp63-64を用いる。

吾人が事物に対する観察点が従来の経験で支配せらるるのは言を待たずして明瞭な事実である。

Without getting involved in lengthy
discussion, it is clear that our 
personal point of view is ruled by
our personal experience of the world
and knowledge that we have acquired
over the years.

経験の勢力は度数と、単独な場合に受けた感動の量に因って高下増減するのも争われぬ事実であろう。

It is undeniable, I think, that the degree,
variety and level of experience varies 
greatly from person to person.

絹布団に生まれ落ちて御意だ仰せだと持ち上げられる経験が度重なると人間は余に頭を下げる為めに生れたのじゃなと御意遊ばす様になる。

As for the wealthy man, born with a 
silver spoon in his mouth, with his 
constant experience of having his 
desires fulfilled with words such
as " As sir wishes; it is an honor for
me to fulfill sir's wishes," " sir " will
perhaps end up thinking that people
are born exclusively to bow their 
heads before him.

金で妾を買い、金で邸宅、朋友、従五位迄買った連中は金さえあれば何でも出来るさと金庫を横目に睨んで高を括った鼻先を虚空遥かに反り返えす。一度の経験でも御多分に洩れん。

Those fellows who have spent their 
money on alchohol, or women, or
a beautiful house, and those who 
have bought themselves friends and
have managed to procure themselves
fifth rank in the Court, giving them 
acsess to the Nobility, well, these
people will say that everything
can be done with money.So, keeping
their hungry and loving eyes on their
safes, they will raise their noses 
towards the infinite sky and ridicule
the world of the poor. A single 
experience will suffice.

この箇所を選んだのは、文学的に特に秀逸かどうかではなく、英語と日本語の表現のしかたが際立っているように思えたからである。

一般的に翻訳のほうが原文より長くなる。というのは、「レアリア」が日本語と英語では異なるからだ。

「レアリア」とは、簡単に言うと、その国の人ならば当然知っているであろう、その国の「常識」のことである。

「絹布団」が「シルバースプーン🥄」(銀の匙)になるのも面白い。
「妾」(めかけ)が単に「おんな👩」になっているのも面白い。

こういう英語と日本語の「レアリア」の違いが私にとっては面白いのだ。

「読書の秋」。自分の好きな日本文学を英語で読むことも乙なものだと思う。
