Individual Fashion Industry Business Report - Opening Ceremony -

This report will describe concept and designer brand which expands internationally nowadays, using framework, such as SWOT, PESTEL. In addition to these, there will be annual report and financial data of the company.


First of all, it would be explained the nature of the company, Opening Ceremony. According to Reference (n.d.), “the nature of business means that the sector or industry to which a company belongs, what the company does, which including the type of services it provides how it is formed”. Explaining additionally, an example of this is that it can be said that Apple is technological company yet, the nature of McDonald is food service. As a result, Opening Ceremony is a service relating to fashion and fashion industry. In addition, according to fashionbi (2014), Opening Ceremony is grouped into bridge market for market segmentation and core market is classified into apparel.

Opening Ceremony and Opening Ceremony, LLC. was originally established in the United States, New York in 2002 and founders are Carol Lim and Humberto Leon who they were friends from UC Barkeley (Opening Ceremony YEAR). Carol Lim and Humberto Leon act CEO and creative director of Opening Ceremony (Business of Fashion n.d.) In addition, these two works as a creative director of Kenzo sice 2012 Spring collection (Fashion Press n.d.) Nowadays, Opening Ceremony is well known as a concept store that ultramodern exclusive shop approaching multinational brands and retails that operates in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo in Japan and there is also Opening Store store at Ace Hotel in New York (Opening Ceremony n.d.).

Opening Ceremony has an interesting concept that is ’new shopping experiences’ represent that make an adventure and exploration from shopping (Opening Ceremony Japan n.d.A) Opening Ceremony and two designers visit new country annually to get a lot of inspirations from their culture and fashion. They, therefore, select the best stuff which inserts into the clothing and apparel (Opening Ceremony n.d. A)

In addition, Opening Ceremony has other four concepts: a designer representing the country, a new designer, a traditional brand, a unique product selected carefully in the country, these four aspects would be able to make a fun access in a shop and customer can experience shopping with diverse designs and products (Opening Ceremony Japan n.d. A).

“Their private line is currently sold at the retailer's four locations in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo, as well as other stores such as Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman and Ssense. The Tokyo store was launched in partnership with Onward Holdings Co. Opening Ceremony also had a store in London's Covent Garden that has closed.” (Business of Fashion n.d.)

Fashionbi (2014) shows financial report and data of Opening Ceremony and Opening Ceremony, Llc. ended on December 31, 2014 (See Figure ?~?), which the amount of net sales and as well total revenue as rapidly declined between 2008 and 2014. It could not find any recent financial data. However, there is a financial data by Onward Kashiyama and Onward Holdings that it does not mention not only Opening Ceremony but also other brands operated by Onward, but it may be seen the overall business transition and financial condition Opening Ceremony inclusive..........
