Coldest of Grain (reading notes) 和訳付き v 2.0

"The dark night deepens, northern snow
hardens the soil and hail hits earth
like cold corn"
The Seafarer
translated by
Charles Harrison Wallace (1999)

"night's shadow darken'd,
from the north it snow'd,
frost bound the land,
hail fell on the earth,

coldest of grains."
Codex Exoniensis, the sea-farer
translated by
Benjamin Thorpe (1842)

this is majestic. it has the spirit of the best haiku.

自分なりの解釈:

長夜に揚げ雲
北の鯨が泣き雪染めり
荒天荒地氷(こおり)氷柱(つらら)
地に残った米粒(こめつぶ)は冷たく光る*

*(one more line from me: 家の茶碗が割る声)
