Kyoto's Ebisu Shrine, affectionately known as "Ebisu-san", becomes a hub of activity during the New Year as people flock there seeking business prosperity and familial happiness. The shrine was established in 1202 by Zen master Eisai as a guardian deity for Kennin-ji Temple. Every year, the shrine hosts the Toka Ebisu Festival, one of the three major Ebisu festivals in Japan, attracting many visitors who come to acquire lucky bamboo branches, known as "Kitcho-zasa." They pray for business success and family prosperity, and the shrine's Kagura Hall resonates with continuous Kagura dance offerings throughout the night.
