1860年代のマサチューセッツ州に暮らすマーチ姉妹の暮らしぶりを描き出していく。先行作品との差異化を図るため、本作は姉妹が実家を離れた後に焦点を当てており、次女であるジョーが、過去を振り返る形で進み[6]、時系列が入り乱れる構成となっている。（WIKI）
原作と違うのは、主人公であるジョーがもっと現代的で自己主張する存在であることです→→
本作には、ジョーが理不尽な要求を突き付けてきた編集者に反論するシーンがあるが、このシーンは原作小説には存在しない。これはガーウィグ監督がルイーザ・メイ・オルコットの進取の精神を表現するために付け加えたシーンである。このシーンについて監督は「オルコットはジョーが作家になる夢を諦めて、夫や子供たちを支えることに専念するという結末を描きたくなかったはずです。しかし、オルコットは商業的な成功を望んでいたため、世間受けする結末を書かなければならなかった。もし、この映画でオルコットが本当に描きたかった結末を描き出せたなら、私たちは何かを成し遂げたと言えるのではないでしょうか。」という趣旨のことを述べている（wiki）

conferは「授ける」という意味。
<書くことで重要さが与えられるのではなくて、書き手に取って重要なことを反映する>という訳になる。
ロングマン辞書では次のような解説になっています→
to officially give someone a title etc, especially as a reward for something they have achieved (ロングマン辞書)
なので公式な形で何かを与えるという意味で使われます。

大統領は彼女に自由勲章を授与した.
💡自動詞だと相談する、という意味になります。

主人公ジョーは現代社会に生きていたわけではないけれど、「書かれているからといってそれが重要なことだとは限らない」という現代人が考えるべき問題を理解しているとあります💡ネットニュースやSNSで話題になっているからといってそれが重要というわけではない(it does not confer importance)というわけですね。
Jo doesn't know it, but as she speaks the above, she is fully defining our modern era of the immediacy of the news cycle and the ever-present discord available across social media. What we see in writing reflects what we see as important. It's something everyone must pay attention to when putting words on the page. Is this really what we want to see as important? Is this really what we want to be remembered for? If not, perhaps it is time to leave the page behind and change what we see as important in the world.

怒りをあまり面に出さない母親にたいしてどうしたら怒らずに済むのかジョーが尋ねる場面です。
“But you’re never angry,” Jo presses.
“I’m angry nearly every day of my life.”

“I’m not patient by nature. But with nearly 40 years of effort I’m learning not to let it get the better of me.”
get the better ofで「〜に勝つ」という意味。
by natureは「生まれつき」という意味。
なので、元々我慢強かったわけではない、ほとんど毎日怒りは感じているけど、40年の努力で、怒りに負けないようになったと教えてくれています。
