Reasons Why I Love Sports
Have you heard of Hozumi Hasegawa?
「長谷川穂積さんを知っていますか？」
He is a former professional boxer originally based in Nishiwaki City in Hyogo.
「彼は兵庫県西脇市出身の元プロボクサーです。」
When he was in his prime, he was known for his incredible speed, skill, and technique.
「彼が全盛期だった頃、彼は驚異的なスピード、スキル、そして技術で知られていました。」
I'm not a boxer.
「私はボクシング素人です。」
I have never practiced it in my life and have no idea about the technical aspects of the sport, but the amazing skill set he showcased in every match fascinated me a lot and made me a fan of his.(I bought his autobiography.)
「私はこれまでボクシングをしたことがなく、技術的な側面については全くわかりませんが、彼が試合で見せる驚異的な技術には非常に感銘を受け、彼のファンになりました。（自伝も買いました）」
The fact that he was born and raised in Hyogo, where I come from, gives me a sense of closeness, which is also a reason why he is my favorite boxer. (My dad met him by chance in a sauna in Kobe. Hozumi was sitting right next to my dad!)

Last night, while scrolling through short clips on social media, this video popped up.
「昨晩、SNSで短い動画をスクロールしていたら、このビデオが出てきました。」
In the video, Hozumi Hasegawa was sparring.
「ビデオでは、長谷川穂積さんがスパーリングをしていました。」
I couldn't believe my eyes because the way he threw every punch against his opponent was amazingly fast and beautiful to the point where it looked like an art!
「彼が相手に繰り出すパンチが驚くほど速く、美しく、まるで芸術のように見えたので、私は目を疑いました！」
It’s amazing how athletes like him can maintain such a high level of performance long after they’ve officially retired.
「彼のようなアスリートが、公式に引退した後もこれほど高いレベルのパフォーマンスを維持できるのは驚くべきことです。」
Watching this video made me realize again how much I like sports.
「このビデオを見て、改めて自分がスポーツがどれだけ好きかを再認識しました。」
I think it’s great that I have a passion for sports, even if I haven’t practiced them all.
「すべてのスポーツを経験していなくても、スポーツに情熱を持っているのは素晴らしいことだと思っています。」
Watching different sports like boxing can give me a new perspective, even if I'm not involved in any of the technical aspects.
「ボクシングのような異なるスポーツを見ることで、技術的な面には関わっていなくても、新たな視点を得ることができます。」
There are so many sports, and each one is completely different, but I think how athletes handle games or matches is the same.
「スポーツはたくさんあり、それぞれが全く異なりますが、アスリートが試合やマッチに対処する方法は同じだと思います。」
What I want to emphasize here is the famous saying, "Practice makes perfect."
「ここで強調したいのは、「練習が完璧を作る」という有名な言葉です。」
Watching a great athlete like Hozumi Hasegawa always reminds me that top athletes must practice a lot.
「長谷川穂積さんのような偉大なアスリートを見ると、トップアスリートはたくさん練習しなければならないことをいつも思い出します。」
Whether it’s basketball, baseball, or boxing, top athletes need to do all kinds of practice.
「バスケットボールであれ、野球であれ、ボクシングであれ、トップアスリートはあらゆる種類の練習を行う必要があります。」
In any sport, they put in a tremendous amount of practice and effort.
「どんなスポーツでも、トップアスリートは膨大な量の練習と努力を積み重ねています。」
Repeated practice, which can be boring or agonizing at times, is key to improving performance in games or matches, and this applies to all sports.
「繰り返しの練習は、時には退屈で苦しいこともありますが、試合やマッチでのパフォーマンスを向上させる鍵であり、これはすべてのスポーツに当てはまります。」
It’s always fascinating to see how athletes hone their skills.
「アスリートがどのようにスキルを磨いているかを見るのはいつも魅力的です。」
Sports really do show how dedication and hard work lead to improvement and success.
「スポーツは、献身と努力がどのようにして向上と成功につながるかを本当に示しています。」
It’s inspiring to see how top athletes’ commitment translates into their performance, and it serves as a powerful reminder for all areas of life, whether it's sports, business, or learning a new skill like English.
「トップアスリートのコミットメントがどのようにパフォーマンスに反映されるかを見るのは刺激的であり、スポーツ、ビジネス、あるいは英語のような新しいスキルの習得、人生のあらゆる分野においても、それは同じだということを思い出させてくれます。」
The way I see sports as an adult is different from how I did as a child.
「大人になって、スポーツの見方が、子供の頃とは変わりました。」
When I was a kid, my focus was more on physicality.
「子供の頃は、より身体的な部分に焦点を当てていました。」
I was simply inspired by unbelievable performances and abilities.

However, as I grew older, my perspective changed.

I'm finding the beauty in the solid mentality that top athletes have.

I’m more inspired by how each athlete approaches what they do to achieve their goals.

Hozumi Hasegawa's short video obviously embodied both aspects of why I love sports.
