Vulnerability and Safe Space -
This post is about what are the characteristics of others' talks that you find unforgettable.
Recently I heard many presentations by not only classmates but also other professionals. Thinking about what makes a person's talk unforgettable, I came to one conclusion.
2. Vulnerability
It's neither how much new info is in there, nor how adept he or she is at making a presentation.
It is the matter of how he or she shows his/her own vulnerability.
3. Safe Space
However, it's easier said than done. Then the next question is what kind of settings might enable people to show their vulnerability.
To me, it's a sense of safety that "this is the place where I don't have to show myself off and just can be myself".
In class, I see some faculty quite good at creating such a safe space for students, whereas other just seem to leave it to chance (the ability of individual student).
Therefore, if I were in a position of doing so, I will convey a clear message of "be youself, don't hesitate to show your vulnerability".
