Spring 2018 Course 6: Independent Study -校長のリーダーシップの論文執筆-
This final semester has been very packed, but this Independent Study actually took the largest amount of time, so let me explain about it!
あっという間の最終学期でしたが、実は一番時間を割いていたのがこのIndependent Studyと言われる個人リサーチでしたのでそれについて少し紹介したいと思います^^

校長のリーダーシップに興味を持ちはじめ、卒業までに論文を書こう！と思い立ったのが昨年5月頃。そこから色々と先学期までに下準備をしてきました。
It was May last year when I got interested in principal leadership, and writing a paper on that particular topic. From then on, I had strategically prepared for my study this semester.
1. Independent Studyとは？ ～論文を書こうと思い立つも挫折しかける～
＜昨年6月頃 Last June＞
私のスクールSIPAでIndependent Studyというものがあることを知るが、これは指導教官を必ずつければならず、K-12教育政策についてSIPAには造詣の深い教授がほぼいないため挫折しかける。
I found that my school SIPA offers a course called Independent Study, which is essentially individual research. However, we need to secure a supervisor to register for this course, and I nearly gave up because there was no faculty at SIPA who was well-versed in this topic.
2. 指導教官探しの旅 ～ここでもご縁が生きる～
＜昨年7～9月頃 Last July-September＞
昨年春学期にEducation Policyの授業を教えていたTeachers CollegeのProf. Carolyn Riehlに連絡。
元々彼女はWhat we know about successful school leadershipという2000回以上も引用されているペーパーを書いていたこともあり、指導教官をお願いする。
並行して何人かの教授にもお願いしたが中々上手くいかず、彼女が引き受けてくれることに。
I reached out to Prof. Carolyn Riehl at Teachers College, whose course on Education Policy I took last spring. She published a paper named What we know about successful school leadership, which has been cited more than two thousand times. I asked her and some other faculty for supervision, and she finally undertook it.
3. アウトライン準備 ～足を運んで情報収集～
＜昨年10～12月頃 Last October-December＞
Outlineを固めるために軽い文献調査、そしてTeachers Collegeや他大学の教授（10人以上）にメールをして直接話を聞きにいく。
I did a preliminary literature review and talked with some faculty at TC as well as other universities (e.g., CUNY) in order to solidify my outline.
4. 先行文献調査と素案作成 ～中身から文法構成まで～
＜昨年12月～今年1月 Last December-January＞
固めたOutlineをもとにLiterature Review等を一通り済ませ、ペーパーの素案を書き終える。
I spent a bulk of time on lit review based on the outline, and finished drafting the body of the paper.
そして今学期に入ってからは素案をもとに教授と2週間に1度のミーティングを行い、それぞれの部分についての内容・構成等々について議論をしながら詰めていきました。
またWriting Centerのコンサルティングを週1で確保することが出来たのも非常に大きかったです。
教授が見切れない細かい書きぶりの部分（文法・構成）を丁寧にチェックしてもらえました。
And this semester, I had a check-in meeting with the prof every two weeks, where we discussed contents and organization of each section in the paper. Additionally, I visited the Writing Center every week to get feedback on my writing style. The consultant kindly checked every sentence that I wrote and provided in-depth feedback from grammer to organization.
5. 論文の仕上げ ～なんと70ページ超に！～
さてそんなこんなで昨日ようやく書き終えた70頁超のペーパー。内容としては大きく分けて以下の2つになります。 And finally I finished finalizing it yesterday! This paper is mainly divided into two parts.
(1) How has the role of Japanese principals been characterized by policies?
(2) What kind of capacity-building practices are in place to support different dimensions of school leadership development in Japan?
１つ目は、日本の校長の役割が政策によってどのように形成されてきたのかを、4つのリーダーシップモデル（Transactional, Instructional, Transformational, Distributed）を使いながら、戦後の国レベルの法令と政策文書の分析を通じて明らかにするというもの。
２つ目は、校長のリーダーシップの発展を支えるための政策が国・地方でどのように行われているかを、4つの側面（採用・選考、研修、権限拡大、評価）に着目しながら明らかにするというものです。
The first half aims to illuminate trends in the role of the Japanese principal through an analysis of national legislation and policy documents, using four models of leadership （Transactional, Instructional, Transformational, Distributed. The second half aims to illuminate leadership development practices at a national as well as regional level, with a focus on four dimensions (recruitment/selection, professional learning, autonomy and evaluation).
それで結論は？というところですが、今この論文として書いたものを２つのペーパーに分割して、それぞれを海外のジャーナルに出願すべく準備中です。
