こどもの選択肢を増やすってどういうこと？ What does it mean to give more choices?

勉強頑張ってる
小中学で受験する
習い事複数やってる

Studying even though they don’t want to,
Going to a private school (which requires lots of studying outside of school hours),
Busy with several after school activities…

そんなお子さん、周りに多いです。

I know many children like that.

子どもや親にかけられるプレッシャー
大変です。

The society puts so much pressure on children and their parents.

本当にやりたくてやっていて
親がそれを応援するなら素敵だと思う

I think it’s really nice if it’s purely what the children want and the parents are simply supporting them.

でもそうじゃないとなかなかきついよね

But if not, it can be quite hard.

よく耳にするのは
勉強できた方が、いい学校行った方が、
色々習っといた方が、「選択肢が広がる」という声

What I often hear parents say is,
Kids can “have more choices” if they
excel academically, go to a better school,
or learn more skills.

それも一理あるのかもしれない

Well that makes sense in a way.

そもそも子どもにとって選択肢って何だろうなー

What does it mean to have more choices anyway?

これからの人生やりたいこと、目的を見つけてワクワクして生きて欲しいとは思う。

I hope that my children find a passion and goals, and be excited about life.

でもそのためにどのような選択肢を与えればよいのだろう

But what choices should I give them?

その答えはわからないけど、まずは私がワクワクしていたいと思う。
大人って楽しい。大変なこともあるけどやっぱり楽しいって。

I don’t have the answer, but I want to be excited about my life.
I want to show them how fun it is to be a grown up, even if we have to deal with problems.

結局こどもは親の背中見て育つっていうしね

After all, they say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, right?
