【イギリス留学#48】英語の発音良い人って格好良い

今日も相変わらずテストでした。その内容を少しだけ書いて、後はスピーキングテストの対策についても書いたので、お時間の許す限りご覧ください。

Mock exam -Listening-

今日はListeningのテストがありました。聞こえてきた単語を書くというめっちゃ簡単な問題があったり、5分くらい話しているのを聞いて20問一気に答えるという難しい問題もありました。

このテストに関しても来週Feedbackを受けてから、書いていきたいと思います。明日はグループに分かれてSpeaking testを受けます。正直あんまりテストの仕組みが分かっていませんが、頑張っていきたいです。

Prepare for speaking test

「明日のスピーキングテストに向けて、学校が提供しているe-learningの教材に取り組んでおいた方がいいよ」と先生からメールが届いていました。その内容を軽く書いていきたいと思います。

出来るだけ翻訳を介さずに教材を理解するために、英単語をそのまま用いることがあります。鬱陶しいビジネスマンみたいになる箇所があるかもしれませんが、許してください。

Pronunciation

この教材はまず発音のことから始まりました。すごく基本的なことですが、僕は英語の発音が全然よくなくて、発音が良い人に凄く憧れがあるので、丁寧に取り組んでいきたいと思います。

まず1つの単語にSyllableはいくつあるのか考えていきます。例えばofficerだと3つだし、tennisやabsentだと2つです。そしてSyllable stressについても考えました。Desertだと太字の方にアクセントがくるみたいな感じです。

Listeningの時聞き取れなくて苦しむことも多いLinkingについても学びました。ただある程度一定のパターンがあります。例も合わせて以下に載せておきます。太字の部分を繋げて発音します。

1.Vowel sound to vowel sound
→They all
2.Consonant sound to vowel sound
→Turn off
3.Consonant sound to same consonant sound
→red dress

Stressed content sounds and reduced function sounds

まずはそれぞれの言葉の定義を確認しておきます。

Stressed sounds
→Stressed sounds slightly louder, longer, and higher in pitch than other sounds.
Reduced sounds
→Reduced sounds are said more quickly than other sounds and reduced vowel sounds are shorter.
Content words
→Content words are stressed because they have more meaning or communicate more important information than other words. They can be nouns, main verbs, adjectives, adverbs, or question words.
Function words
→Function words do not provide information in a sentence. They are there to make the grammar correct. They are reduced, which means that they are usually said quickly, and the vowel sound is made shorter. They can be articles, conjunctions, pronouns, auxiliary (or secondary) verbs or prepositions.

”Andy is working at a hospital.”というsentenceだと太字にしたところが、content wordsなのでStressed soundsになります。逆にis/at/aはFunction wordsなので、Reduced soundsになります。

おわりに

本編と全然関係ないのですが、海外の方と関わる中でInstagramに投稿してて良かったなって思います。インスタを交換した際にプロフィール画面を見て貰えると大体会話に繋がるからです。

僕は京都で着物を着ている写真や、花火の写真など日本の文化を感じられる写真を投稿しているので、結構興味を持ってもらえて話が広がります。(バイクも結構惹きがあります。売っちゃったけど)

そんな感じで話が広がるタネを色んな所に巻いておけば海外の方と関わりやすくなるので良いなと思います。日本の風景などの写真や動画を沢山用意しておくのもお勧めです。

英語日記

英語力向上のために留学期間中は英語日記を書いています。英語で話した内容などを書くことが多いです。まだまだ英語力が乏しいですが、暖かい目で読んでください。※Chat-GPTで修正はしています。

Today we had an event where we designed a tote bag. This event started at 12 pm, but my friends could only come at 1 pm. so I asked a staff member "My friends will come 1pm, can we join later?", he kindly replied "Yes! Of course!"

I joined this event after my friend arrived. I initially wanted to draw cherry blossoms on a tote bag, but it proved to be too difficult, so I changed my design to only draw the tree.

I participated in another event called ”Games Evening.” Many games and snacks were prepared. However, I didn't play games; I talked with a Korean person and a Hong Kong person.

We discussed whether we had ever been to Japan, Korea, or Hong Kong. They had visited Japan and Korea/Hong Kong, but I haven't been to either place. So, they recommended me places to visit in their hometowns.

Additionally, we talked about popular singers and foods in each of these places. We also discussed useful phrases. It was a special time.
