林真理子リライト『風と共に去りぬ』そして『若草物語』

🔴“Gone with the wind” and “Little Women”

It is just a coincidence that last week I started reading “Gone with the wind” in Japanese and “Little Women” in original English. So I was amazed to find the fact that both were written during the Civil War in 1860s, also the former written from the South and latter from the North side perspective!!

先週から『風と共に去りぬ』(林真理子さんのリライト版)と『若草物語』(英語原書)を同時進行で読み始めました。

“The Little Women” Louisa May Alcott

この2冊を選んだのは、前者が話題の新作で、後者が最近映画化されたからという理由で、単なる偶然です。

ところが驚愕の事実が判明。
前者は南北戦争の南軍、後者は北軍の立場から書いているのです❗️

レット・バトラーは、お金持ちの集まるパーティで「南部には軍艦も、製鉄所も大砲工場もない。あるのは綿花と奴隷と傲慢さだけ」と言ってしまい、南部の人々から激しく非難されるのですが、彼の言ったことが本当なんですよね…。

Even though “Little Women” was written in 1860s, the girls talk and their small problems are almost the same as those of today’s girls. The English they speak is almost the same as today’s. It is impressive to think of the historical fact that Japan was still in medieval age at that time...
若草物語は、1860年代に書かれたとは思えないほど、現代を生きる女性にも共感できる内容で、英語も読みやすいです。
この時代、日本はまだ大政奉還もしていないことを考えると、感慨深いものがあります。
