アメリカの図書館と、そこで出会った日本の絵本たち

うん。行く！
アメリカへ転居した頃、娘は通園する先が無かった。月齢条件を満たしていないという理由で公立のプレスクールには入園できず、かと言って月謝が20～30万円のアメリカの保育園に通うのは経済的に無理なため、9月のキンダーガーテン（義務教育）入園まで家で見ることにした。
子連れで外を歩いていると、満面の笑みをたたえたアメリカ人が子供にフレンドリーに話しかけてくれる。それ自体はとてもありがたかったのだが、娘はいつも戸惑った表情を浮かべて固まっていた。
彼女はもともとシャイな性格。そこへ来て全くわからない言葉（＝英語）で早口に話しかけられるので、どう反応して良いか分からなかったのだろう。「娘は英語をまだ理解できなくて」と説明すると、相手はちょっぴり気まずそうな笑顔で去っていく。
いつしか娘は、英語や英語を話す人を避けるようになっていった。
当初は頑張っていたアルファベットのプリントも嫌がるようになり、地域の子供向けイベントにさり気なく誘ってみても気乗りしない様子。
そんな娘でも、図書館への誘いだけは二つ返事で応じてくれた。
❏ワンフロア丸ごとキッズスペース
当時通っていたのは、自宅から地下鉄で３駅の、ケンブリッジ公共図書館。
窓から見える景色も趣きがある。
この図書館の魅力の１つは、充実したキッズスペース。なんと3フロア中の1フロア（最上階）をまるごとキッズスペースに充てている。
「〇〇ちゃん、もう少し静かに読んでね」と周囲を気遣ってピリピリする母親の姿はどこにも無い。ゆったりと時間の流れるピースフルな空間だ。
❏娘の英語嫌いを癒してくれた絵本たち
ここはまさに宝の山。あらゆる種類の児童書で溢れている。
ヒジャブを被った女の子が主人公のお話もあれば、中国人の一人っ子にフォーカスしたお話もある。オーディオブックのコーナーもあれば、新刊本が並べられているコーナーもある。
英語を避けていた娘も、ここには否応なく引き込まれていった。日本にいた頃に図書館でやっていたのと同じように、気に入った絵本を何冊か引っ張り出して読み始める。そんな風にゆっくり過ごしてたくさん本を借りて帰るとき、娘は決まってスキップしていた。
当時彼女を英語の世界に誘ってくれた素敵な絵本たちを書き留めておきたい。
1. 最初にはまって何度も聴いていたオーディオブック「Chick and Brain: Smell My Foot!（作・絵：Cece Bell）
しっかり者で礼儀にうるさいひよこChickと、マイペースなおとぼけキャラの脳みそ人間Brainのチグハグなやりとりに思わずクスっとしてしまう。
日常的に使う英語表現が豊富に散りばめられていて、子供達の英語学習に寄与してくれた一冊だ。
2.何度も読んだ心に響くお気に入りの本The Lion and the Bird（作・絵：Marianne Dubuc)※元々フランス語の絵本
ライオンと小鳥の友情を、美しい季節の移り変わりとともに描いた一冊。
ささやかな幸せを分かち合える相手がいることの大きさを再発見できる。ライオンの気持ちが、イラストとデザインでふんだんに表現されていて、思わず感情移入してしまう。
3.イラストの精緻な美しさで思わず手に取り、さらに日本の絵本の翻訳版だったことに感銘を受けた本「Chirri & Chirra/チリとチリリ」（作・絵：どい かや）
チリとチリリの二人の女の子はいつも自転車で走り回り、海の世界や雪の世界などの幻想的な世界に迷い込んでいく。そこで楽しくも不思議な体験をするストーリー。ページをめくるたび、子供の夢がぎゅっと詰まった美しいイラストに見入ってしまう。
❏読み聞かせに選んだ、日本の絵本「うさぎのさとうくん」
秋になり、娘は無事にキンダーガーテンに入園した。その頃にはすっかり英語嫌いもおさまり、厳しくも愛情深いベテラン先生のもと英語を体系的に学び始めていくことができた。
12月のウィンターホリデーに入る前、私は娘の担任の先生から、絵本の読み聞かせをするチャンスを頂けた。絵本のチョイスはこちらに任せてもらえるらしい。ならばぜひ日本の絵本を紹介したい。
そこで、図書館でも読んでいた「うさぎのさとうくん」の英語版を選ぶことにした。
「流れ星を集めてみたい」「雲をちぎってみたい」――子供なら一度は抱く夢ではないだろうか？うさぎのさとうくんの世界ではそんなピュアな願いが次々叶えられていく。そのユニークな話の展開と美しい色彩のイラストにいつの間にか引き込まれていく。
図書館で借りることもできたが、せっかくなのでこの機会にシリーズごと購入することにした。
※最新刊はまだアメリカでは刊行されていなかった。
❏ますますファンになった、気さくな代表者のいる絵本出版社
購入にあたっては、近所の書店では取り扱いがなかったため、ニューヨークにある出版社から取り寄せる必要があった。ただ配送に少し日数がかかるようだ。読み聞かせの日に間に合うか少々不安が残る。
ちょうど翌日からニューヨーク旅行を予定していたので、ニューヨークに購入可能な書店がないか問い合わせてみることにした。
実は先ほど挙げた「The Lion and the Bird」も「Chirri & Chirra」も、ここの絵本出版社Enchanted Lion Booksが手掛けている。（無駄に）愛をこめた問い合わせメールを送った。
すると翌朝返信があった。メールを開いて驚く。なんとpublisher（出版社の代表者）から返信が来ていたのだ。
素敵なメールをありがとう。
ニューヨークの書店はどこもとても狭いので、お望みの本が常にあるか保証はできかねます。当社のオンラインで購入してもらえれば、ボストンであれば遅くとも〇日には届くので、一番確実でしょう。
喜びをかみしめつつ返信を送ると、すぐに返信がきた。
平日にニューヨークを訪れるなら、私たちの小さくて明るいオフィスをぜひお訪ねくださいね。
私のハートは踊った。なんて素敵なお誘いだろう。
しかしニューヨークを訪れるのは翌日。しかもたった2泊3日の滞在なので、かなりタイトなプランニングをしていた。ブルックリンにあるこの出版社を訪問すれば、いくつかの予約をキャンセルしなければならない。一人なら間違いなく行っていただろう。けれど、、、
「とても素敵な機会をありがとうございます。ただ残念ながら今回の旅程では時間を確保するのがむずかしそうです、次にニューヨークを訪れるとき、必ず訪問させてください」と正直に書いた。
「もちろん。ニューヨーク訪問の際には、ぜひ私たちを訪ねてください」と返してくれる。
なんて優しい代表者なんだろう。もともとファンだったが、この出版社をますます好きになった。
❏どの国の子も同じ顔つきになった夕焼けのシーン
旅行を終えて帰ると、彼女の言う通り絵本は届いていて、無事に読み聞かせをすることができた。
うさぎのさとうくんの「A SEA OF TEA/ こうちゃのうみ」の表紙を見せると生徒たちは"bunny!!"と口々に叫んで興奮ぎみ。冒頭から、ページいっぱいに描かれたラズベリーのお菓子に、皆の目はくぎ付け。読み進めていくと「凧だ！」「小さなうさぎがいる！」と色々な発見をして喜んでくれた。
そして印象的だったのは、一面夕焼けのページになると、どの子もキラキラした瞳で吸い込まれるように見ていたこと。子供達が全身全霊で見入っているのが分かる。
美しいものに見入っている時って、アジアの子も、ラテンアメリカの子も、アフリカの子もみんな、自然と同じ顔つきになるんだなと思って、胸が少し震えた。その美しいものが日本の絵本であることに感慨もひとしおだった。
その後、娘はキンダーガーテンで頑張って英語を学び、1年生に進学するときには担任の先生からリーディングスキルが高いと褒めて頂けた。
2ヶ月半前の帰国以降、彼女の英語は急速に失われている。それでもネイティブスピーカー仕込みのきれいな発音だけは、あの苦労した日々の証のように、彼女の中に遺されている。
先日の夕方、家に向かう道で娘は「ママはLとRの発音練習が必要だね」と指摘して、きれいなお手本を披露してみせた。彼女のすっかり頼もしくなった様子が嬉しくて、「えー頑張る！」なんて応じてみせる。
あの頃、娘を癒やしてくれた素敵な絵本と図書館と、日本の素晴らしい絵本を世界に広めてくれた優しい代表者のいる出版社に、「ありがとう」の気持ちをこめて私は空を見上げる。日本もアメリカも空は繋がっているから。
Japanese picture books I found at an American library.
When I asked my daughter, “Do you wanna go to the library today?”
She always said, ”Yes. Let's go!”
When our family moved to the US, two years ago my daughter didn't have any school to go to. First, she couldn't enroll in a public preschool due to her birth month. Second, American nursery schools, which are 1500-2000 dollars per month, were not affordable for us. Therefore we had to wait until her kindergarten would start in September (compulsory education).
My daughter is shy. And when we went out, kind and friendly American people often talked to her with a big smile in a strange language for her, that is English. I was very grateful for that, but my daughter always looked confused. Whenever I explained that my daughter didn't understand English at all, Kind American people left with a slightly awkward smile on their faces. Eventually, she started avoiding English and people who spoke English.
She has started to refuse to study the alphabet, which she had tried so hard at first and to be reluctant even when I asked her to local children's events.
However, she was always willing to accept only my invitation to the library.
❏One floor is entirely dedicated to a children's space.
At the time, we often went to the Cambridge Public Library, which was three subway stops from our nearest station.
A stylish building with one side of glass. Plenty of natural light shines into the spacious space. Lights and red walls give us a sense of style. The view from the window is also charming.
One of the attractions of this library is its extensive children's space. One of the three floors (the top floor) is entirely dedicated to a children's space.
There weren't any mothers who were worried about the people around her and her children and said "Please read a little more quietly.''
It is a peaceful space where time flows slowly.
❏Picture books that healed my daughter's dislike of English
This place is truly a treasure trove. It's filled with all kinds of children's books.
Some stories feature a girl wearing a hijab, others focus on a Chinese child with no siblings. There is a corner for audiobooks and another corner for newly released books.
Even my daughter, who had avoided contacting English, was drawn into it. She pulled out some of her favorite picture books and started reading them, just like she used to do at the library in Japan.
We always enjoyed the time at the library and after that borrowed many books. On our way home, my daughter always skipped happily.
I would like to write down the wonderful picture books that introduced her to the wonderful world of English.
1) This audiobook is the first book my daughter is addicted to:
“Chick and Brain: Smell My Foot!” (written and illustrated by Cece Bell)
You can't help chuckling at the friendly interactions between 'Chick', a well-mannered and polite chick, and 'Brain', who goes at his own pace. This book is full of English expressions that are used on a daily basis, and has contributed to children's English learning.
2) Our favorite heart-touching book that we have read many times: “The Lion and the Bird” (written and illustrated by Marianne Dubuc) *Originally a picture book in French
A book that depicts the friendship between a lion and a small bird, along with the beautiful changes of the seasons. You can rediscover the importance of having someone to share your small happiness with. The lion's feelings are expressed so abundantly through the illustrations and designs.
3) I couldn't help but pick up this book because of its beautiful cover, and I was even more impressed by the fact that it was a translated version of a Japanese picture book, “Chirri & Chirra” (written and illustrated by Kaya Doi)
Two girls, Chirri and Chirra, are always riding around on their bicycles and getting lost in fantastical worlds such as the sea world and the snow world. A story where they have a fun and mysterious experience there. Every time you turn the page, you must be captivated by the beautiful illustrations that are filled with children's dreams.
❏Choosing the Japanese picture book “Rabbit Sato-kun” as a picture book to read aloud
In the fall, my daughter successfully enrolled in kindergarten. By that time, her dislike of English had completely subsided, and I was able to begin learning English systematically under the guidance of a strict but loving veteran teacher.
Before the winter holidays in December, I got a chance to read aloud a picture book in my daughter's classroom. So, I decided to read the English version of ''Sato the Rabbit'' which I had read at the library.
''I want to collect shooting stars'' and "I want to catch clouds''. These are the dreams every child had at least once. In the world of Sato the Rabbit, such pure wishes are fulfilled one after another. You will be drawn in by the unique story and beautiful colored illustrations.
I could have borrowed them from the library, but I decided to purchase the entire series. However, these books are not available at our local bookstore, so I had to order them from the publisher in New York. Our family was planning a trip to New York the next day accidentally, so I decided to inquire if there were bookstores in New York where I could purchase the book.
Both "The Lion and the Bird'' and "Chirri & Chirra'' which I mentioned earlier, are produced by Enchanted Lion Books, a picture book publisher here. I sent a loving inquiry email. To my astonishment, I received a reply from the publisher(representative of the publisher) the next morning.
There were two main messages written on it.
The first one was that all the bookstores in New York were very small, so you couldn't always find what you were looking for, so buy online to be sure.
Another message was that if you were in New York on a weekday, please stop by the bright office.
My heart jumped. What a wonderful invitation. However, our family was supposed to stay only for 2 nights, so we had a very tight schedule. If we visit this publisher in Brooklyn, we would have to cancel some reservations. I definitely would have visited, if this trip wasn't for family. However...
After thinking about it for hours, I honestly wrote this. "Thank you for the wonderful opportunity. Unfortunately, it seems difficult to find time on this itinerary. Next time I visit New York, I will be sure to visit.''
"Of course. Please come visit us when you visit New York. Until then, take care," she replied.
Such a kind representative. I've always been a fan, but since then I've been a bigger fan even more.
❏The page with the beautiful sunset
When I returned home after the trip, the picture book had arrived just as she had said, and I was able to read it to the children without any problems.
When I showed the cover of Sato the Rabbit's book ``A SEA OF TEA / Kocha no Umi'', the students got excited and shouted ``bunny!!''. From the beginning, everyone's eyes were glued to the raspberry sweets that filled the page. As I read on, they were happy to discover various things, such as ``It's a kite!'' and ``There's a little rabbit!''
What was most impressive was that When we arrived at the page with the sunset, all the children looked at it with sparkling eyes, as if they were absorbed in it.
I was so touched when I realized that Asian children, Latin American children, and African children all have the same facial expressions when they see something beautiful.
It's been almost two and half months since our family returned to Japan, and my daughter's English is rapidly fading away. Still, the beautiful English pronunciation of her remains in her, like a testament to those difficult days.
Yesterday evening, on our way home, my daughter pointed to my English pronunciation and said, "Mom, you need to practice pronouncing L and R.'' I was happy to see my daughter grow up to be so dependable, and I answered: "I will try hard."
I looked up at the sky and said "thank you" to the wonderful picture book, library, and the kind publisher who spread the wonderful picture books of Japan to the world. Since I knew Japan and other countries are connected by the skies.
