私の英国物語　Broadhurst Gardens NW6 (27) The Twelve Days of Christmas

熱狂的なカウント・ダウンとともに迎えた新年。
しかし、“Happy New Year!” と言っている時も、実はクリスマスの期間である。
Christmas Eve (12月24日日没)から Epiphany (1月6日日没)までの期間はChristmastide (降誕節)の期間で、Christmas Day の翌日からエピファニーまでの期間を "The Twelve Days of Christmas" という。
Epiphany (公現祭) は、この日、東方の the wise men が、黄金、乳香と没薬を携え、星に導かれて聖母子を訪問したとされ、幼な児イエスが、初めて神としての姿を顕した日なのである。

エピファニーの前夜 (1月5日日没以降)を Twelfth Night といって、Twelfth Night Cake (フルーツ・ケーキ)や Wassail (ale をベースにジンジャーなどのスパイスと蜂蜜を入れた飲みもの)でお祝いをする。
Shakespeare の最高の喜劇と称される "Twelfth Night" は、このときに上演されたことでタイトルにもなっている。劇自体は Twelfth Night にまつわるものではないが、merry-making なストーリーが、クリスマス最後の夜をお祝いする気分を盛り上げる。

クリスマスに歌われる Christmas carol に "The Twelve Days of Christmas" という賛美歌がある。
12日間、1日ごとに与えられるプレゼントを積み重ねていって、12番の12日目には12日分の長い歌詞になるというユーモラスな積上げ歌 (cumulative song) だが、それぞれの象徴的なプレゼントには意味が込められており、子供や若い人たちにクリスマスの意味を知ってもらうための歌とされる。
歌詞の意味を知ったうえで聴いてみると、とても深いものに感じる歌だ。

The Twelfth Day は、クリスマスの飾りの最終日。 Crib (馬小屋の聖母子の人形)やクリスマス・ツリーは、この日をもって片づけられる。 飾ったままにしていると bad luck とのこと。
トラファルガー・スクエアの大きなクリスマス・ツリーは、5日が見納めとなる。
