出会い Encounter
僕にはニュージーランド（NZ)にラグビーを通じた友達＝ラグ友＝がいます。彼の名前はショーン、NZで農園を営んでいます。でも僕は彼の顔を見たことがありません。”どういうこと？昭和の文通じゃあるまいし・・友達なの？”って思いますよね。そう思うのは当然だと思います。でも。。
それは、去年の4月、突然のDMからでした。
「こんにちは。ラグビー好きなの？僕は日本のラグ友が欲しいんだ。だって日本のラグビーを愛してるんだ、本当に。僕はラグビーのホーム・NZからだよ」ショーンのInstagramのアイコンにはサングラスをかけた彼の顔があるけれど、Instagramに投稿されてるのは彼の農園や自然で、人の顔は見当たりません。ラグビーのこともほとんど見当たらないし。。
新手の詐欺に発展する可能性もゼロではないと思ったけれど、そのＤＭをもらったのはちょうどサンゴリアスの試合観戦に出かけるところだったのでこう返してみました。「メッセージありがとう。僕はボーデンのプレイするサンゴリアスの試合を見に行くところなんだ」するとすぐに返事が。
「それはいいね！彼は今日リザーブだよね。写真とってきてよ」
I have a friend in New Zealand (NZ) through rugby, i.e. rug-friend.
His name is Sean and he runs a farm in NZ. But I have never seen his face.
"What do you mean? Showa-era pen pal? Is he a real friend?"
You might feel this way. The truth is…
It had been started by a sudden DM in April 2021.
"Hello. Do you like rugby? I want a Japanese rugby friend. Because I love Japanese rugby so much. I'm from rugby's home, NZ."
What I could see was his face with sunglasses and cap as Sean's Instagram icon. While his farm and nature have been posted on his Instagram, No human face was shown so far. Furthermore, no descriptions or pics related to Rugby were found there.

“New Scam?” having some doubts, I replied to him like this "Thank you for your message. I'm going to watch Beauden's performance at Sungoliath’s game." Because I was about to go out for the match when I found Sean’s message and I never wanted to be late for the game.
He answered me "That's cool! He's replacement today. Get a picture for me."
新しい文通相手 My New Penpal in NZ
そんなことから令和のＩＴを用いた文通が始まりました。
「僕は今年からトップリーグを見始めたところなんだ。来週からプレーオフだよね」とか、タイムリーなラグビーの話題で話しかけてくれるので、それに乗っかって楽しくラグビー談義が始まり、続くことになりました。
彼はSKY TVでトップリーグ（ＴＬ）を見ていて、試合の話題になると「すべてのTLの試合が見れるわけではないから、放送されるかなぁ」と心配するけど、話題になるのは大一番だったりするから、しっかり放送されて、試合の感想を試合後にチャットします。僕がインスタにラグビーのストーリーをアップしていると、そのことを言及したりします。僕の愛するクボタスピアーズが神戸製鋼との試合でレッドカードを出されながらも勝利し、はじめてＴＯＰ４入りした時には「美しい物語をありがとう」なんてコメントをくれたりしました。ライアン・クロッティをストーリーにアップしたときには、彼はスピアーズでのクロッティの活躍に驚き、その話題でしばらく盛り上がりました。
That's how Reiwa-era's IT-based correspondence began.
"I just started watching the top league this year. The playoffs will start next week, right?" He watches Top League (TL) on SKY TV, and when it comes to the topic of games, he worries like this, "I can't watch all TL games, so I wonder if that game will be broadcasted or not..."
Since our focus was always onto big games, every game of Sean’s interest had a good broadcast, and I would chat about my impressions of the match after the game i.e., Cyber after-match function.
As I upload rugby stories on Instagram, he send me messages about them. When my beloved Kubota Spears won a match against Kobe Steelers despite receiving a red card, and finally entered the top 4 for the first time, he commented "Thank you for the beautiful story." When I brought Ryan Crotty up in Instagram story, he was so impressed by Crotty's performance at Spears, and we talked about that for a while.
Crotty said "See you in 2 weeks if game will be held"
心地良い関係 Comfortable Relationship
そんな感じでいつも話したいときにラグビーの話をする友達としてショーンとの関係は続いています。お互い話したいときにメッセージをして、返事がなければ”忙しいのかな”ぐらいで、それ以上を求めないので負荷のない関係と僕は感じています。たまに天気の話やご飯の話もするけれど、基本はラグビーの話をする相手としてお互いのことを見ているので、”ショーンはどう思うかな？”って試合があったり、彼がオンラインになっているとメッセージしています。ＮＺとの時差が2時間しかないのも思いついたときに連絡しあえるいい距離だなあと思っています。
In that way, my relationship with Sean continues as a friend who always talks about rugby after my return from stadiums. When want to talk to each other, we send DMs. If I don't get a reply soon, I would take it like, "He might be busy and may be back when available", and Sean might feel the same. Sometimes we talk about weather and food, but basically we see each other as rugby-talking mate. So when I think “How Sean would see this game?” I would text him. Since time difference between Japan and NZ is only 2 hours, it's comfortable to chat when an idea comes to mind.

ラグビーで盛り上がる Rugby Fever
ちょうどバレットやマッケンジーがサンゴリアスでプレーしたり、姫野選手がNZで新人賞を獲ったりと二人の間の話題が欠くことはありませんでした。
そんなこんなでショーンとの文通が始まって一年半ぐらいで、日本代表とAll Blacks(ABs)とのテストマッチが決まりました。
「試合見に行くの？」「もちろん、行きたいけどチケット獲れるかなぁ・・」
そんなやり取りをしているうちに試合当日を迎えました。
（それまでに愛するクボタスピアーズが同日に熊谷での試合決定があったりしましたが、通院の関係で熊谷には間に合わないため、日本代表戦一択となりABs戦＠国立競技場でのチケットもなんとか取れました）
試合当日は通院でバタバタして、そのあとも試合前には秩父宮でのJAPAN RUGBY AUTUMN FESTIVALに寄ったりと忙しく、ショーンとやり取りはできなかったんだけど、ABs戦のハーフタイムにスマホを覗いてみると。。。
We never ran out of topic because Barrett and Mckenzie just played for Tokyo Sungoliath, and Himeno won the Rookie of the Year award in NZ.
When one year and a half passed since I started exchanging messages with Sean, a test match of Japan national team against All Blacks (ABs) was determined.
"Are you going to watch the game?"
"Of course I want to go, but I wonder if I could obtain a ticket..."
While we were having such exchanges, the day of the game arrived.
On the day of the match, I was occupied by hospital visit in the morning, and after that, I was too busy to stop by the JAPAN RUGBY AUTUMN FESTIVAL at Prince Chichibu Rugby Football Stadium. Just like that, I wasn't able to communicate with Sean, but during halftime of the ABs match, I looked at my smart phone. . . .
I saw Sean's TV for the 1st time!
見てるやん！やっぱり！！
ショーンから前半戦の感想とラグビー日本代表＝Brave Blossom(BB)への思いがあふれるメッセージの数々”I'm happy to see BB passion"なんてニクイことも書いてくれていました。「この7年でＢＢはすごく成長したよね、コーチングもいいよ」と喜んでくれました。

Sean shared his impressions of the first half of the match and a number of messages were filled with his thoughts on Japan's national rugby team: Brave Blossom (BB). “BB has grown a lot in the last 7 years, and the coaching is good,” he commented happily.
地下鉄でじんわり Tears in Subway
試合の結果はご存じのとおり。
BBは僕たちサポーターに最後まで勝利を信じさせてくれました。
もちろん悔しいけれど、JAPAN XV vs AUSTRALIA Aの試合で感じたもどかしさはなく、価値ある敗戦を見せてくれました（でも、悔しいけど）。
帰りの地下鉄でスマホを開くとショーンからＢＢの取り組みへの称賛と共に
”You can be proud of your team"の言葉。
このシンプルな言葉が胸にグッときました。
your team …. そうか日本代表は誇れる自分たちのチーム
ラグビーがなぜ胸を打つのか。
闘ってるのは彼らだけど、それは自分ごとでもある。
ラグビーが表現する価値観は、自分が人生の中で大切にしたい価値。
そんな前提を当たり前にしているショーンの言葉がとても嬉しかったのです。
ラグビー選手は世界中に友達ができるのが醍醐味のひとつだというけれど、それは選手に限ったことでもないようです。
もうすぐ始まるJAPAN RUGBY LEAGUE ONEのシーズン
それに続くRWC2023
いろんな人と時を共にしながら、二度とない瞬間を味わい、世界一楽しみましょう。
ショーンともいろんな言葉を交わせれば嬉しいなと思っています。
I would not rather talk about result of the match here.
BB made the supporters believe in their victory until end of the game.
Of course, I am sorry for the result but the game was not frustrating because it was not the match like JAPAN XV vs AUSTRALIA A, and BB showed us a “worthy loss” (though I still regret the result…).
When I open my smartphone on the subway train on the way home, Sean praises BB's efforts like this
“You can be proud of your team''.
This simple phrase touched my heart.
Your team …. Yes, BB is our team to be proud of.
Why does rugby strike our hearts?
It’s their fight, but it's also my own issue.
The values that rugby expresses are values that we cherish throughout our life.
I was very happy to hear Sean's words, which take such assumptions for granted.
People say making friends all over the world is one of the great things for rugby players, but it seems that could be applied for rugby fans and supporters.
The JAPAN RUGBY LEAGUE ONE season is about to start followed by RWC2023.
Mingling with various people, let’s savor every minute of every day to have the most fun in the world.
I would be happy if I could keep exchanging words with Sean, of course.
あれから１年 ONE year since then
このノートを書いてから約一年立ちました。
もうすぐラグビーワールドカップ2023も始まります。
ラグビー日本代表の新しいスローガンは”Our Team”
ショーンが“Your team”と表現してくれてから一年も立たずに、それは私たちのスローガンとなりました。
どの国も故障者が多く、波乱含みのRWC2023となりそうですが、それもラグビーなのかもしれません。
先日、羽田空港から飛び立つラグビー日本代表のメンバーを見送ってきました。「元気で思い切りプレイしてほしい」との願いを伝えに行ったつもりが、ラピースにハイタッチをもらったり、セミシにスネークポーズいただいたりと、こちらが元気をいただいたようです。
どうぞ怪我無く悔いなきプレイをしてください。Our Team, Brave Blossoms!
It's been almost a year since I wrote this note.
Rugby World Cup 2023 is about to start.
The new slogan of the Japan National Rugby Team is “Our Team”
Less than a year after Sean described as “Your team,” it became our slogan.
Every country has injured players, and it looks like RWC2023 will be an eventful one, but that may be rugby too.
The other day, I saw off the members of the Japan national rugby team who flew out of Haneda Airport.
I intended to convey my wish, "Dream boldly and play energetically to the fullest", but it seems that was me who received energy e.g. high five from Lappies, and a snake pose from Semisi.
Please play without regrets without getting hurt. Our Team, Brave Blossoms!
