【英語で読書感想文】Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens デリア・オーウェンズ『ザリガニの鳴くところ』

Title: Where the Crawdads Sing
Author: Delia Owens

Last year I saw a lot of positive reviews for this book. So I got the Japanese edition once it was published at the beginning of the year, and this is undeniably one of my best reads of 2020!

It is a coming-of-age story about a girl named Kya, who lived in the marsh of North Carolina. She lived with her family when she was a little child but after her mother left home, other family members followed suit one by one. Finally her abusive alcoholic father disappeared, and Kya had to live by herself in the marsh. The protagonist gave up going to school because she was “different” from other kids in the town, and the wildlife in the marsh were Kya’s only friends and natures taught her about life. We witness her journey from adolescence to adulthood. She grew up a beautiful girl, met some guys who cared for her, and experienced betrayal. One day, a guy was found dead in the marsh and police officers started to look for Kya, because the victim was the person whom she knew very well.

According to the introduction of the author Delia Owens, she is also a zoologist and award winner in the field of nature writing. Her writings especially on nature and wildlife were mercurial, informative, and beautiful indeed. Halfway through, I felt the love story part was not for me (because it was like a soap opera). But after the final twist was revealed, I couldn’t stop thinking about how Kya struggled with her loneliness and how she desperately craved being loved by someone.
