セッション定番曲その7：Just The Two Of Us by Grover Washington Jr. feat. Bill Withers
これもあらゆるセッションイベントでの定番曲。インストでもアリですが、やはり歌が入るとぐっと雰囲気が出ますね。（歌詞は最下段に掲載）
和訳したものはあちこちのWebサイトに掲載されているので、ここではポイントだけ説明します。
ポイント1：crystal
邦題はなんと「クリスタルの恋人たち」らしい。今度これでリクエストしてみようかな。1981年、日本はキラキラした時代に突入。田中康夫ちゃんの小説のタイトルが「なんとなく、クリスタル」でした。嫌なこじつけだなぁ。
歌詞の中では「雨粒がきらめく」様子を詩的に歌っています。
「crystal」って発音難しいですね。発音記号だと「krístəl」で、「a」の音は明るく開いた音ではなく暗くこもった音になります。「クリスタル」じゃないんですね。ほとんど消えて「tl」に聞こえる場合もあります。
ポイント2：情景描写
ということで歌詞の出だしの部分は情景描写が続きます。「雨粒」だの「太陽（の光）」だの「虹」だの。ここを説得力をもって歌う為には、ちゃんとその情景を思い浮かべてみる必要がありそうですね。雨が降って→陽が差して→虹がかかる（心の中に）。なんだか心が少し暖かくなりますよね。
ポイント3：I want to spend some time with you
ここにきてようやくストレートに自分の気持ちを表明しています。「一緒に過ごしたいんだ」と。「君のことを考えることがあるんだ」と言っているので「君」は今は目の前にはいないんでしょうね。だからこそ言えるストレートな告白なのかも。こんなこと言ってみたいし、言われてみたいですね。
ポイント4：Just the two of us
「私たち」を強調して「他にはいない、私たちふたり」「ふたりきり、という存在」と歌っています。その後に出てくる「we」が何者であるかを強調している訳ですね。これがタイトルになっているというのがポイントですね。それだけで「君」を大事に思っているのが伝わりますね。
ポイント5：We can make it if we try
「make it＝何かを成し遂げる、成功する」という意味です。「私たちに不可能なんてないんだ」と。これもひと続きのフレーズとして発音します。
ポイント6：Building castles in the sky
「build castles in the air＝空想にふける」という慣用句ですが、ここではどういう意味なんでしょう。
文字通りに解釈して、上記の「私たちに不可能なんてないんだ」の例示として「空にそびえるお城を建てることだって出来る」と歌っているのか、それとも「そういう想像をふたりでしよう」というダブルミーニングなのか。知っているっていう方、教えてください。
ポイント7：Good things might come to those who wait, Not for those who wait too late
「良いことは待っている人のもとに訪れる」という決まり文句。「ちゃんと待って（受け入れる準備をして）いてね」ということですが、この歌詞では「でも待ちすぎても何も起きないかもしれない」と否定しています。だから「We gotta go＝前に進まなきゃいけない」「for all we know＝私たちが知っている範囲では、おそらく」と、運を待つだけでなく自ら前向きに考えて動き出すことを訴えかけています。
ポイント8：「Just the two of us 進行」
この曲の気持ち良さはあちこちで解説されている特徴的なコード進行にも由来しています。私に楽典的なことを語る資格はないのですが、「Ⅳ▵7→Ⅲ7→Ⅵm7→Ⅴm7→Ⅴm7→Ⅰ7」
邦楽を全然聴かないので、よく知らないのですが、ヒットしている曲で繰り返しうまく使われているようですね。日本人ってメジャーセブンスの響きが好きだからなぁ、とは昔からよく言われていましたね。
