小説『慧子』15／歓迎されざる客／Keiko 15／Unwelcome guest

　日本に着いた翌日、慧子は、新しい勤務先である帝都大学脳科学研究所に出向いた。受付で所長の小田 健斗 博士の秘書が慧子を出迎え、彼女の案内で、慧子は小田を所長室に訪ねた。
   The day after arriving at Japan, Keiko went to her new workplace, Teito University's Brain Science Institute. At the reception desk, Keiko was greeted by the young female secretary of the institute’s director, Dr. Kento Oda. With her guidance, Keiko visited Oda in the director's office.

　５5歳の小田は、研究所のホームページで見るよりもエネルギッシュでがっしりした人物だった。マホガニー製の重厚な事務机の向こうで椅子に座った小田は、慧子が室内に入って来ても立ち上がらなかった。挨拶も握手もなしに、小田は威圧的な調子で切り出した。
   Oda, 55, was a more energetic and sturdy person than he appeared on the institute's website.　Oda was sitting in a chair behind a heavy mahogany office desk and did not stand up even when Keiko came into the room. Without greeting or handshake, Oda began talking  in an intimidating tone.
 
「君のブログ記事は、読んだ。君がスタンハーゲン研究所にいられなくなるはずだ。脳とAIをじかに接続して脳機能を強化する研究に真っ向から異議を唱えたのだからね。この研究はスタンハーゲン研究所にとっては最重要のプロジェクトでDARPAの助成金も得ている。ある意味、君はアメリカの国防政策にも逆らったことになる。それに加えて、君は警察沙汰にまでなったセックス・スキャンダルを引き起こした張本人だ」
"I read your blog article. It is quite understandable that you have been kicked out from Stanhagen Institute. You openly opposed the research for enhancing human brains by connecting them directly to AI. This research is a top priority research project of Stanhagen Institute and has received funding from DARPA. In a sense, you also said no to American defense policy. In addition to that, you're the one responsible for the sex scandal that ended up in the police."
 
「私は、気まぐれであの記事を書いたわけではありません。信念を持って書いたのです。記事を投稿する前に、研究所内で何度も反対意見を述べました。所長も仲間の研究員もまったく聞く耳を持たなかったから、やむなくブログに私の意見を書いたのです。研究所の意見ではなく、あくまで私個人の意見であると前書きをした上での記事です」
"I didn't write that article on a whim. I wrote it with conviction. Before posting the article, I raised objections many times within the institute. Neither the director nor my fellow researchers would listen to me at all, so I had no choice but to write my opinion on my blog. In its preface, I clearly sand the article states my personal opinion, not that of the institute."
 
「今でも、自分は正しかったと思っている。そういうことかな？」
"You are still convinced that you were right. Is that so?"

「その通りです。それから、私がセックス・スキャンダルを引き起こしたとおっしゃいましたが、私は性的暴行の被害者です。表現は正確にお願いします」
"Yes, I am. Also, you said I caused a sex scandal, but I am a victim of sexual assault. Please be precise in your expressions."
 
「しかし、先に暴力を行使したのは、君だと聞いている。君は、元ボーイフレンドが君に対するリベンジ・ポルノをネットに投稿するのを止めようとして彼に殴りかかった。違うかね？」
"However, I heard that you were the one who used violence first. You hit your ex-boyfriend to stop him from posting revenge porn against you online. Isn't it wrong?"
 
「その通りです。リベンジ・ポルノの公開は、精神的な性的虐待です。それだけではありません。被害女性の社会的生命を断つ可能性が極めて大きい犯罪です。私の行為は正当防衛だったと考えています。その後の裁判でも、私の行為は、状況的に止むを得ないことだったと認められています」
"Yes, I did. Releasing revenge porn is psychological sexual abuse. That's not all. It is a crime that has an extremely high possibility of terminating the victim's social life. I believe my act was legitimate self-defense. In the subsequent trial, it was acknowledged that my actions were unavoidable under the circumstances."
 
　小田所長が首を傾け肩をすくめてみせた。アメリカ人が話相手の意見を受け容れないが反論するのも面倒くさいと感じているときにみせるジェスチャーと同じだった。慧子は、小田はアメリカ生活が長いと聞いていた。その間に身に着けた仕草なのかもしれないと思った。
   Director Oda tilted his head and shrugged his shoulders. It was the same gesture that Americans make when they don't accept the other person's opinion but feel it's too much trouble to argue with her/him. Keiko had heard that Sakaki had lived in America for a long time. Maybe it was a gesture she had picked up during that time, she thought.

　小田が慧子に皮肉な目を向けてきた。
「君にとって幸いなことに、この研究所では人間の脳とAIの接続は研究していない。本当は、しているべきだと思うのだが、このテーマでの文科省の研究補助金を他の研究機関に奪われてしまった」
   Oda gave Keiko a sarcastic look.
  "Fortunately for you, this institute does not explore the connection between the human brain and AI. I think we should be doing the research in that area, but we have lost the research grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to other research institutions on this theme."

「ここでのメインの研究は、他者と社会的関係にある状況での人間の脳機能の研究だ。この研究には、被験者が装着したまま自由に動き回れる脳機能計測装置が不可欠だ」
"The main research here is the study of human brain function in situations where people are in social relationships with others. A brain function measuring device that allows subjects to freely move around while wearing the device is essential to this research.

　慧子は帝都大学脳科学研究所のウェブサイトで、小田が言及した研究の内容を見ていた。世界的にもユニークな研究だと感じた。慧子には、人間の脳をAIに接続するより、社会的活動を行っているときの人間の脳の働きを研究する方がはるかに重要に思えた。
Keiko was looking at the content of the research Oda mentioned on the Teito University Brain Science Research Institute website. The research, she felt, was unique worldwide.In Keiko's view, studying how the human brain works during social activities was far more important than connecting the human brain to AI.

「私たちが君を受け容れることにしたのは、君が非侵襲的でポータブルな脳機能計測技術の専門家だからだ。裏返して言えば、君がそれ以外の形でここでの研究に関与することは、一切期待していない」
  "We chose to accept you because you are an expert in non-invasive, portable brain function measurement technology. In other words, I do not expect you to be involved in the research here in any other way.
 
「つまり、脳機能計測の専門家という以上の仕事はするなとおっしゃるのですね」
"You're saying that I shouldn't do anything beyond being an expert in brain function measurement."
 
「分かりが早くてよろしい。私の秘書が君を脳機能計測技術研究グループの研究室に案内する。グループリーダーの宝生博士から仕事の説明を聞き給え。私からは以上だ。君から何か付け加えたいことがあるかね？」
"You seem to be a quick learner. That is good. My secretary will guide you to the laboratory of the Brain Function Measurement Technology Research Group. Listen to the group leader Dr. Sakaki explain the job. That's all from me. Is there anything you would like to add?"
 
「いえ、結構です」
慧子は踝を返して所長室を出た。
歓迎されないことは想定内だった。ともかく、脳科学の研究現場にとどまれただけで幸運だと慧子は思っていた。

"No, that's fine."
Keiko turned around and left the director's office. It was within her expectations that she would not be welcomed. In any case, Keiko considered herself lucky to be able to stay in the brain science research field.
