　慧子は、博士課程以来の恋人フィリップ・カウフマンにとって、今の慧子は性欲と独占欲の対象でしかないのではないかと疑っていた。それでもフィリップとの関係を断てずにいるのは、自分が父と同じ異性関係での脆弱さを抱えているからに違いない。そう思った慧子は、父のように人生をしくじらないために、今度こそフィリップとの関係を断つ決意をした。
   Keiko suspected that Philip Kaufmann, who had been her boyfriend since her doctoral course, saw Keiko as nothing more than an object of sexual desire and monopoly. She thought that she still held on to her relationship with Philip because she had the same sexual vulnerability as her father had. Keiko decided that this time she should cut off her relationship with Philip so that she would not mess up her life like her father did.
 
　「私たちの関係は終わり」と一言メールした慧子は、彼からの電話にもメールにも一切応じることを止めた。1ヶ月後、突然フィリップが訪ねて来て、復縁を迫った。拒む慧子に、フィリップは二人の性交を撮影したスマホの映像を見せ、別れるならこれをネットに公開すると慧子を脅した。映像からはフィリップの声と姿は消され、脅迫目的で編集されたことが明らかだった。激怒した慧子は、フィリップからスマホを取りあげようとするが、反対に押し倒され暴行されかけた。
   "Our relationship is over," Keiko e-mailed him and stopped responding to his calls and e-mails. A month later, she was unexpectedly visited by Philip, who pressed her to reconcile. When she refused, Philip showed her a smartphone video of their sexual intercourse, and he threatened to release it on the internet if she broke up with him. Philip's voice and appearance had been removed from the footage. It was clear that it had been edited for intimidation purposes. Enraged, Keiko tried to take the smartphone away from Philip, but she was pushed down and almost assaulted.
 
　慧子は、ドアをけ破って入ってきた中年の黒人女性に救われた。女性はフィリップからスマホを取りあげ、警察を呼びフィリップを脅迫と障害の現行犯で逮捕させた。
　黒人女性は自らがフィリップを監視しているＦＢＩ捜査官であることを明かした。フィリップには彼が関わる国防関係の研究情報をロシア・マフィアに流している疑いがあり、女性は、彼のバッグに盗聴器を仕掛けて行動を監視していたのだ。慧子は、母に続いて自分までがアメリカの国防機密に関わる事件に巻き込まれたことにショックを受けた。
   Keiko was saved by a middle-aged black woman who broke in the door. The woman took Philip's phone and called the police to have Philip arrested for blackmail and injury red-handed.
   A black woman revealed herself to be an FBI agent watching Philip. Philip was suspected of leaking information about his defense-related research to international information broker, and the woman had a wiretap in his bag to monitor his activities. Keiko was shocked to learn that she, along with her mother, had been involved in an incident involving American national defense secrets.
 
　フィリップとの一件は、勤め先の研究所での慧子の立場を悪くした。元々ギクシャクしていた上司・同僚との関係はさらに悪化し、慧子は、重要な情報へのアクセスを制限されるようになった。
　そんな慧子に、研究所長が、彼が交流のある日本の研究所から研究者招聘の申し出が来ていると告げた。体の良い追い出しであることは明らかだったが、アメリカでの生活に何の希望も見いだせなくなっていた慧子は、その申し出に淡々と応じるのだった。
   The incident with Philip put Keiko in a bad position at the research institute where she worked. Her already strained relationship with her boss and her co-workers worsened, and Keiko was restricted from accessing important research information.
   The director of the institute told Keiko that there was an offer to invite a researcher from a Japanese research institute with which he had close ties. It was clear that this was a disguised deportation of her from the institute. But Keiko, who could not find any hope in her life in America, calmly accepted the offer.
