小説『慧子』13／両親の離婚の真相と慧子の絶望　Keiko13／The truth about her parents' divorce and Keiko's despair

　学部課程を修了した慧子は、人間の無意識と意識の関係を科学的に追究する決心をする。自閉症の子供たちのためのフリースクールの運営を手伝いながら理科系の大学院への進学準備をすること1年。慧子は、カリフォルニア州ではエル・カミノ大学と並ぶ名門校、オークランド大学の神経科学大学院に進学する。こうして、慧子は、脳神経科学者としてのキャリアをスタートさせるのだった。
 
   After completing her undergraduate studies, Keiko decided to scientifically study relationship between the human unconsciousness and consciousness. She spent a year preparing for graduate studies in science while helping run a free school for autistic children. Keiko enrolled the graduate course in neuroscience at the University of Auckland, a prestigious school on par with El Camino University in California. Thus, Keiko started her career as a neuroscientist.

　オークランド大学で博士号を取得した慧子は、ニューメキシコの民間研究所で働き始める。ある日、母・晶子が突然、研究にやってくる。慧子は晶子を追い返そうとするが、日本で父・博人が自殺未遂を図ったと知らされ、母を自宅に受け容れる。そこで、慧子は母から父との離婚の真相を聞かされる。
   After earning her PhD from the University of Auckland, Keiko started working at a private research institute in New Mexico. One day, her mother, Akiko, suddenly came to the institute. Keiko tried to send her back.
   But when Akiko informed her that her father, Hiroto, attempted suicide in Japan, Keiko accepted Akiko to her house. There, Keiko learned from Akiko the truth about the divorce of her parents.

　日本で、父・博人と母・晶子は米軍が秘かに資金提供している人型ロボット開発プロジェクトの主任研究員だった。研究方針をめぐって二人の間がギクシャクする中で、博人は学会で出会った中国時中国系アメリカ人の女性研究者と親しくなり、やがて深い関係に陥る。
   In Japan, Keiko’s father, Hiroto, and mother, Akiko, were senior researchers in a humanoid robot development project secretly funded by the US military. While the two were at odds over their research policy, Hiroto befriended a Chinese-American female researcher he met at an academic conference, and eventually fell into a deep relationship.

　ところが、彼女は中国政府が中国シンパの日本人科学者を増やすために日本に送り込んだエージェントだった。博人はプロジェクトから追放され、晶子は研究助手に降格され重要情報へのアクセスを禁じられる。
    It turned out that the female researcher was an agent sent to Japan by the Chinese government to increase the number of China-sympathetic Japanese scientists. Hiroto was expelled from the project. Akiko was demoted to a research assistant and denied access to critical information.

　研究を進めることを熱望する晶子は、アメリカに移住しアメリカ政府の１００パーセントの監視下に入ることを条件に主任研究員への復帰を願い出る。晶子の才能を高く評価していたアメリカ政府は、彼女の提案を受け容れ、こうして、晶子は一人娘の慧子を連れてアメリカに移住することになったのだった。
   Aspiring for furthering her research, Akiko asked for her return to principal researcher on the condition that she would emigrate to the United States and come under 100 percent surveillance by the American government. The U.S. government, which appreciated her talent, accepted her proposal, and Akiko emigrated to America with her only daughter, Keiko.

　慧子は、晶子が人型ロボットの研究のために博人を見捨てたと責めるが、晶子は博人が自分と恵子を捨てたのだと反論するのだった。
　晶子の口から、さらに驚くべき事実が明かされる。アメリカでの晶子が再婚相手、ハワード・レノックスは、実は、アメリカ国防総省犯罪捜査局（DCIS）が晶子を監視するために彼女が勤める研究所に送り込んだ捜査員だったのだ。彼の正体を見抜いた晶子は、アメリカ政府の信認を得るためにハワードを誘惑し男女関係を結んだのだった。
   Keiko blamed Akiko for her abandoning Hiroto for the sake of her pursuit of humanoid robot research. But Akiko rebutted that Hiroto abandoned her and Keiko.
   Akiko revealed even more shocking fact to Keiko. Akiko's remarried partner in America, Howard Lennox, was actually an agent whom the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) had sent to the laboratory where Akiko worked to monitor Akiko. Akiko, who discerned his true identity, seduced Howard and had a relationship with him in order to gain the trust of the American government.

　父は女スパイのハニートラップにかかって職を失い、慧子のもとを去り、ついには自殺未遂を図った。母は研究のために父を捨て、自らを監視していたアメリカ人を誘惑し彼と結婚した。こうした両親の行動が、慧子を打ちのめした。
   Keiko's  father, Hiroto, was deceived by a  honey trap of a female spy, lost his job, left Keiko and eventually attempted a suicide. Keiko's mother, Akiko, abandoned her husband. Then she seduced the  American agent who was monitoring her and married him. That was for the sake of advancing her researcher career. These deeds by her parents struck Keiko severely.

　その頃、慧子は博士課程以来の恋人と縁を切ろうとして切れずに悩んでいた。一方、研究においては、独自の発想をどこまでも追究しようとする姿勢が周囲との軋轢を引き起こしていた。慧子は自らの中に父のあまりにも人間的な弱さと母の非人間的ともいえる研究へ執念を見たと感じて、激しい自己嫌悪に襲われるのだった。
   At that time, Keiko was struggling to cut ties with her boyfriend since her doctoral course. On the other hand, in her research, her attitude of trying to pursue her original idea to the limit caused conflicts with her superiors and peers.  Feeling that she saw in herself her father's too human weakness and her mother's almost inhuman obsession with scientific pursuit, Keiko was attacked by intense self-loathing.
