北前船とともに進化した「船箪笥」　【雑感】 Ship chest which evolved with Kitamae Ship

先日、百貨店で開催されて「職人展」で、いくつか匠の技が施されたものに出会った。
その一つが、写真にある「船箪笥(ふなだんす)」である。聞きなれない箪笥、そして見ての通り、飾り金具で覆われたアンティーク風な形なので興味をそそられた。さらに、掲げてあった看板の “北前船の進化とともに”というフレーズに惹かれて。

The other day, I met some craftsmanship at "Craftsman exhibition" held at a department store.
One of them is "Funadansu" in the picture. The chest of drawers that I don't often hear, and as you can see, I was attracted because it was an antique style covered with decorative metal fittings. In addition, I was drawn to the phrase “with the evolution of Kitamae Ship” on the signboard that had been put up.

見てもわからないことだらけである。北前船とは？船箪笥とは？それにまつわる歴史は？など好奇心を駆り立てた。わからないことは聞くに限る、と匠工芸の村田社長に質問をぶつけてみた。

There are lots of things you can't understand even if l look at it. What is Kitamae Ship? What is a ship chest? What is the history of those? I was curious about these. I asked the question about what I didn't understand to Mr. Murata, president of Takumi Kogei.

すると箪笥の中を一つ一つ開け丁寧に説明をしていただいた。簡単にいうと、船箪笥とは、江戸中期から明治末期にかけ、大阪や富山などから日本海を往来した北前船といわれる船にはなくてはならない道具箪笥として積まれたものだ、という。

Then, he opened the chest one by one and explained carefully. To put it simply, the ship chest was loaded as a tool chest that was indispensable for a ship called Kitamae, which traveled from Osaka and Toyama to the Sea of Japan from the middle of the Edo period to the end of the Meiji era.

何故、こんな重い(30㎏～50㎏)箪笥が船内に必要であったのか、大阪から荷を積んで蝦夷地(北海道)まで運び、北前船が蝦夷地の港に入り、そのまま船がお店になるわけである。そこに箪笥が必要不可欠なものになる。つまり金庫である。

The reason why such a heavy (30㎏-50㎏) chest was necessary on board was to load the cargo from Osaka and carry it to Ezochi (Hokkaido). It becomes a store. The chest becomes indispensable there. In other words, it is a safe.

その中でも極めて頑丈な帳箱といわれる箪笥には7つのカギが付いている。それぞれの扉に、また内部の箱にもカギがある。さらに奥にはからくり箱がある。これでは盗んでも密箱にあるお金にはたどり着けない。これぞ比類なき日本のからくり技術である。それを匠の技が造り出している。

Among them, the chest, which is said to be an extremely sturdy box, has seven keys. Each door has its own key, as well as the inner box. There is a karakuri box at the back. This will not allow you to reach the money in the box even if you steal it. This is an incomparable Japanese Karakuri. The craftsmanship has created it.

そして、もう一つ船箪笥といわれる所以がある。この重い箪笥が水に浮くのである。それは幾度となく実証されている。さらに、水が中に入らない、という最大の特徴をもっている。
当時、これを造った職人の技と知恵が注ぎこまれ、いまにその技術が伝承されている。この匠の技を伝承し、製造しているのが福井にある匠工芸。日本で唯一の船箪笥の製造会社である。

And there is another reason why it is called a ship chest. This heavy chest floats on the water. It has been proven several times. Furthermore, it has the greatest feature that water cannot enter.
At that time, the craftsmanship and wisdom of the craftsman who made it were poured in, and the technique is now handed down. Takumi crafts in Fukui manufacture and pass on the skills of this craftsman. It is the only ship chest manufacturing company in Japan.
