複数形でしか存在しない英単語について考えてみよう。これは、単数？複数？

複数形のsを、後に必ずつける単語について。

a pair of

は後に必ず複数形の単語がくる。

例）

scissors　刃　⇒ハサミ
socks　⇒靴下
shoes　⇒靴
glasses　ガラス　⇒眼鏡
jeans　⇒ズボン
pants　⇒ズボン
trousers　⇒ズボン
swimming goggles　⇒水泳ゴーグル
gloves　⇒手袋
dumbbells　⇒ダンベル

二つあることで成立する、コトバというわけ。

a couple ofも、同じように使う。（ただし、a couple ofは、複数だから、３つ、や下手したら４つくらいある。）

では、ここでクイズ。
1. They are a pair of scissors.
2. It is a pair of scissors.
どちらが正しい？

答えは、#2

It is a pair of scissors.

BUT！

Where are the scissors?

もOK！

Look at those scissors! I want to buy them!

が正しい。

'scissors' は複数形だが、'pair of scissors'は単数形。

だから、

These scissors are cheap.

This pair of scissors is cheap.

というわけ。

※ちなみに、a pair of～と一緒に使うコトバも、たま～に単数になることもある。

例）That left sock is dirty. Put it in the washing machine.

（＝その左の靴下、汚れてるね。洗濯機に入れて。）

と、いう具合に。

必ず複数形、これは単数形・・・と覚えている日本人がいたので。。

覚えなくても、この知識だけで大丈夫。
