【人間が挑む】外大のおもしろい課題
私は現在、東京外国語大学で英語を専攻しています。
外大はかなり課題が多いのですが、おもろしい（interestingな）課題に出会うこともあります。
本記事では外大のおもしろい課題をご紹介します。
タイトルに【人間が挑む】と書かれていることに疑問を感じた方もいると思います。課題を人間がやるのは当たり前だ、と。

ここではCreative Writingの授業で出されたおもしろい課題をご紹介します。
ある夫婦が朝食をとる場面を300〜500語の英語で書きなさい。その夫婦は最近たった１人の子どもを亡くしたばかりである。読者に夫婦の状況を明確に伝えなさい。（ただし、子どもが亡くなったことをそのまま伝えるのではなく、暗に示すこと。）登場人物それぞれの感情も示しなさい。（ただし、感情そのものを名指しするのではなく、暗に示すこと。）
"Show-rather-than-tell"がこの課題の重要なポイントです。

One morning, George and Mary were at a marble table that was too big for two people. Unread newspapers were piled on the table. The light in the room was flickering, and the flowers in the vase were all dying.
George looked out of the window and found that it was raining cats and dogs. He wore the same black clothes for the entire two weeks. He was drinking the murky soup, sniffling a lot. Mary was in an apron with a lot of stains. She spooned some soup but put it back again. Seeing that, George tried to read her face, but she turned her face away from him. “Honey, you haven't eaten breakfast recently. I know you don't have the energy to eat, but I worry about your health,” he said, with his eyes red and clutching a soppy handkerchief. “Peter was a very good boy,” Mary began to speak slowly. She held a handkerchief to her eyes, but the handkerchief did not get wet at all. “He loved bathing and eating. He always said my food was delicious,” she added. “Yeah. Peter really liked your food,” George nodded deeply. He took the stale banana from the cracked plate and had a bite, still sniffling a lot. He wiped his long, wet nose with his handkerchief. “Thanks for eating my bad food,” Mary grinned at George. “What do you mean?” he tilted his head, sniffling a little. “Oh, I mean…, I mean I'm not a great cook, but I'm glad you eat 100 kilograms of my food every day,” she said quickly, wiping off the sweat with her handkerchief. George put five lumps of sugar in his coffee and drank it up in a single draft. Just then, he stopped sniffing and started shaking. “Wait. You haven't had breakfast for the past THREE weeks, have you? But it is only TWO weeks ago that Peter…” Suddenly he began to struggle and slammed down. Mary jumped up and burst into laughing. “There's no way I could eat poisoned breakfast! It was so hard to put a little bit of poison in breakfast every morning without you and Peter noticing! Now I find that it takes longer for the poison to spread throughout an adult's body than it does for the poison to spread throughout a child's body.” She took off her dirty apron to reveal a beautiful pink dress. George trumpeted in agony, waving his trunk. Then, he could not move any more.
Mary looked out of the window and found that it was a clear day with not a cloud in the sky. She said to herself, “I'll definitely marry a human next time. I’ll have a fully human child.”
