Simon & Garfunkel - Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall
中学生の時に地元の図書館で借りた一枚がサイモンとガーファンクルのアルバムでした。
そもそもは伯父がアマチュアのフォークデュオをしていて、持ち曲のひとつがサイモンとガーファンクルだったので、小さな頃から彼らの音楽は身近な存在としてありました。
その図書館で借りたサイモンとガーファンクルのアルバムの中で特に気に入っていたのが、今回紹介する Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall （邦題：雨に負けぬ花）です。
彼らの曲で有名なものはBridge over Troubled Water（邦題：明日に架ける橋）や、The Sound of Silence、カヴァー曲の El Cóndor Pasa（邦題：コンドルはとんでいく）あたりでしょうか。
このFlowers Never Bend With The Rainfallはもしかすると人によっては聴きもらしている曲かもしれません。
個人的にはかなり好きな曲です。

改めて歌詞を読むと、その詩としてのクオリティーの高さに驚かされます。
そして、今になってこの曲のイメージが変わりました。歌詞をあまりにも理解していなかった。
実はずっとこの曲は和訳タイトルから、「雨にも負けない強い花に生き方を見出す」イメージでいたんです。
でも今回歌詞を読んでいたら、それよりもむしろ悩みながら生きている心理描写だなって感じました。

ぼくは人生が終わらないふりをして生き続けるだろう
雨に打たれても花は凛と咲いていると思って生き続けるだろう
この歌詞の裏には、人生はいつか終わる、雨の中で強くたくましく咲いている花も然り、というような刹那感を今は感じるのです。
そうに感じると、今まで抱いていた人生訓的な曲イメージが、より親身なものに変わります。

感じるものに触れることができないから
サイモンとガーファンクルは、自分たちの心にとても誠実に歌をつくっているのがわかる一節です。
世の中のニュース等で気疲れしているところに、この曲はホッとするコーヒーのような役割を果たしてくれます。
