【英訳】侏儒の言葉25：醜聞

本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Scandals

　The public loves scandals. Those of Byakuren, Arishima, Mushanokoji - How much pleasure the public has found in these! Then, why do people love scandals, especially those of others whose names are known as celebrities? Gourmont says, trying to answer this - 
  “For they make their own scandals hidden within something natural.”
Gourmont is right, but that is not necessarily the whole story. In scandals of all those celebrities, the vulgar, who cannot even cause one themselves, indeed find a perfect way to excuse their cowardice. Simultaneously, they also find an ideal step-stone to establish their superiority that is imaginary. ‘I am aware I am not so beautiful as Lady Byakuren but I am more faithful.’ ‘I am not so intelligent as Mr Arishima but I know better than to do that.’ ‘Compared to Mr Mushanokoji, I am not so -’
  - After speaking this way, how happily they have fallen asleep like a swine!

Or,

　The ability to cause a scandal is obviously a sign of prodigy.

醜聞
　公衆は醜聞を愛するものである。白蓮事件、有島事件、武者小路事件――公衆は如何にこれらの事件に無上の満足を見出したであろう。ではなぜ公衆は醜聞を――殊に世間に名を知られた他人の醜聞を愛するのであろう？　グルモンはこれに答えている。――
「隠れたる自己の醜聞も当り前のように見せてくれるから。」
　グルモンの答は中っている。が、必ずしもそればかりではない。醜聞さえ起し得ない俗人たちはあらゆる名士の醜聞の中に彼等の怯懦を弁解する好個の武器を見出すのである。同時に又実際には存しない彼等の優越を樹立する、好個の台石を見出すのである。「わたしは白蓮女史ほど美人ではない。しかし白蓮女史よりも貞淑である。」「わたしは有島氏ほど才子ではない。しかし有島氏よりも世間を知っている。」「わたしは武者小路氏ほど……」――公衆は如何にこう云った後、豚のように幸福に熟睡したであろう。
