【英訳】侏儒の言葉11：創作

本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Creation

The artist might always create a work of his in a conscious manner. However, taking a look at his creation, a half of its beauty belongs to the world of the mystery, which is well beyond his consciousness. ‘A half’? Or, it is rather ‘most’ of it.

Strange to say, we, who excuse ourselves, accuse ourselves. Our spirits inevitably show up in our works. It is said that ancient sculptors put their palms together every carving stroke, and does their attitude as such not show their awe of this field of unconsciousness?

Creation is always an adventure: after all, once you have done everything you can, all you can thereafter is to leave it to Heaven.

　　I learnt to pursue literature when I was a kid
　　My works weren’t yet good enough cuz I was a kid
　　I realised at last it’s not my fault when I grew old
　　Three parts are my efforts, seven decided by God

This seven-letter poem in Zhao Oubei’s “New Poetry” must have tried to express this. Strange to say, art is something of bottomless greatness. Perhaps we might never be courageous enough to struggle with this awful thing named art if we were indifferent to wealth nor to fame, nor if we did not suffer from our almost insane enthusiasm for creation.

創作
　芸術家はいつも意識的に彼の作品を作るのかもしれない。しかし作品そのものを見れば、作品の美醜の一半は芸術家の意識を超越した神秘の世界に存している。一半？あるいは大半と言ってもよい。
　われわれは妙に問うに落ちず、語るに落ちるものである。われわれの魂はおのずから作品にあらわるうことを免れない。一刀一拝した古人の用意はこの無意識の境に対する畏怖を語ってはいないであろうか？
　創作は常に冒険である。所詮は人力を尽くした後、天命にまかせるよりしかたはない。
　　少 時 学 語 苦 難 円　　唯 道 工 夫 半 未 全
　　至 老 始 知 非 力 取　　三 分 人 事 七 分 天
　趙甌北の「論詩」の七絶はこの間の消息を伝えたものであろう。芸術は妙に底の知れないすごみを帯びているものである。われわれも金をほしがらなければ、また名聞を好まなければ、最後にほとんど病的に創作熱に苦しまなければ、この無気味な芸術などと格闘する勇気は起こらなかったかもしれない。
