【英訳】侏儒の言葉10：尊王

本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

The Royalist

Once upon a time in the 17th century France, Duc de Bourgogne one day asked Abbé Choisy something like this: Charles VI was a lunatic, and how shall I put this into indirect words? Abbé replied promptly: I would simply say, if I were you, sir; Charles VI was a lunatic. It is said that Abbé Choisy counted this answer as one of the greatest adventures in his whole life and was proud of it later on.

I hear that people in the 17th century France were so proud of their king that there still remains such an anecdote as the above even today. However, Japan in the 20th century is no less royalist than France was in those days. Truly, - I can’t tell you how delighted I feel about this.

尊王
　十七世紀のフランスの話である。ある日 Duc de Bourgogne が Abbé Choisyにこんなことを尋ねた。シャルル六世は気違いだった。その意味を婉曲に伝えるためには、なんと言えばよいのであろう？アベは言下に返答した。「わたしならばただこう申します。シャルル六世は気違いだったと。」アベ・ショアズィはこの答えを一生の冒険の中に数え、後のちまでも自慢にしていたそうである。
　十七世紀のフランスはこういう逸話の残っているほど、尊王の精神に富んでいたという。しかし二十世紀の日本も尊王の精神に富んでいることは当時のフランスに劣らなそうである。まことに、— 欣幸の至りに堪えない。
