Algernon of the title is Charlie's white rat buddy who has undergone the same surgery as Charlie. Algernon's actions and fate will eventually befall Charlie, bringing him hope and fear. Knowing what will eventually happen to Algernon, Charlie knows what will happen to him and begins his solitary work. He prepares to mourn his intellect, his genius.
