死刑台のジョークと新年の抱負 / Gallows humour and New Year's resolution

みなさんは、お正月をどのように過ごしましたか？
How did you spend the New Year holidays?

私は両親の住む長野の家で家族と過ごす時間を楽しみました。
I enjoyed spending time with my family at my parents' house in Nagano.

日本のテレビ番組はめったに見ませんが、長野に戻るといつも年老いた両親の好きな番組を一緒に視ます。
I rarely watch Japanese TV shows, but when I return to Nagano, I always watch my aging parents' favourite shows with them.

良質な番組はまれですが、良質な番組には必ず人の心を魅了する瞬間があります。
Good shows are rare, but good shows always have a captivating moment.

その瞬間は「世界ふれあい街歩き「炭鉱で栄えた陽気な街～イギリス・ニューカッスル～」というNHK BSの旅番組を見ていた時にやってきました。
That moment came when I was watching the NHK BS travel program called "Somewhere Street: A lively town prospered by coal mining - Newcastle, England".

４２年間炭鉱で働き、３０年間トンネルを掘っていたという男性に「採掘場という暗いところで重労働は辛かったですか？」という質問をインタビューアーが投げかけたところ、彼はこう答えたのです。
When an interviewer on the show asked a man who had worked in coal mines for 42 years and dug tunnels for 30 years, "Did you have a hard time enduring the heavy work in the dark pits?"
He replied;

「危険な職業に就いていると、ユーモアのセンスが磨かれます。」
“People in dangerous occupations tend to develop a sense of humour.”

「英語には“死刑台のジョーク”という言葉があります」
“It's what is called in English "gallows humour".

死刑台のジョークというのは、「死のような不快で不吉なことについて冗談を言うこと」を意味します。
The gallows humour means "jokes about something unpleasant like death."

「危険なことに立ち向かう時は考えすぎてはいけないんだ。
物事は軽くとらえて、状況を楽しみ、自分を楽しませないといけない。」
“So, you don't feel self-conscious about something hard, danger or whatever.
You have to make light of it and make fun of it, and even make fun of yourself.”

炭鉱やトンネル掘削などの現場の労働者は絶えず生命の危険にさらされています。
Workers are constantly at risk of life at sites such as coal mining or tunnel drilling.

彼らは常に死を意識しながら働いているのです。
They are always conscious of death when working.

死について冗談を言い合うことは、彼らにとっての「人生の今この瞬間を楽しむ」ことだったのかもしれません。
Joking about death may have been "enjoying this present moment of life" for them.

もし私が彼らの立場にあったら、私はこのように考え、行動することができるだろうか？
If I were in their position, could I think and act this way?

彼らの勇敢で機知に富んだ生き様に対する途轍もない尊敬の念が私の内側から湧き上がってきた瞬間でした。
It was a moment in which a tremendous respect for their brave and witty way of life arose from within me.

どんなに大変な状況でも、人生のあらゆる瞬間を楽しみたいという気持ちを思い出させてくれる、そんな番組でした。
It was a good show that reminded me of the desire to enjoy every moment of my life, no matter how hard the situation is.

そのためにも、新年の目標は「自分を俯瞰的（＊）に見る能力をもっと向上させよう！」にしようと思います。
To that end, I would like to make it my New Year's resolution to "improve my ability to see myself from a bird's-eye view!"
