2023年2月、アメリカのUC Berkeley校でNVIDIA 創業者兼CEOであるジェンスン・フアンの講演が行われました。その内容を数回に分けて紹介します。（動画はYouTubeで見れますし、この記事の最後に講演内容の書き起こし（英語）も載せておきます。）

講演内容

ライアン：最近のハイテク業界への逆風についてどうお考えですか？また、ハイテク業界に行くつもりだったけれど逡巡している現役MBA生にアドバイスをお願いします。

ジェンスン：ハイテク業界は素晴らしいですよ。こういう質問は難しいな。曖昧だしね。ともかく、テクノロジー産業は素晴らしいし、将来に渡っても、これほど重要な産業はないでしょう。その理由は、影響力が非常に多くの産業に及ぶからです。Nvidiaは純粋なテクノロジー業界に属しています。インターネットサービス産業に属するテクノロジー企業もあって、彼らはもちろんヘルスケアや林業、製造業ではないけれど、純粋なテクノロジー業界でもありません。その点、私たちは純粋なテクノロジー企業です。そして、純粋なテクノロジー業界は素晴らしいものです。あらゆる産業の中核であり、基盤であるからです。将来は、あらゆる業界が、私たちが創ったテクノロジーを活用して、テクノロジー業界に変貌を遂げるでしょう。だから私はこの仕事が大好きです。
確かに外部環境は厳しいです。本当に厳しい。友人、同僚、あらゆる人が職を失いました。厳しい光景ですが、それもいつかは過ぎ去ります。今のテクノロジー産業の規模は、将来の10分の1、100分の1に過ぎません。この業界は世界で最も活気があり、エキサイティングで、社会にインパクトがもたらせる業界だと思います。ですから、皆さんもぜひ進路として検討してください。
みなさんへのアドバイスとしては…偉大になるためにはレジリエンスが必要です。私を形容する言葉はたくさんありますが、レジリエンスを備えていることは、その筆頭に挙げられるでしょう。私は多くの困難な状況を経験したし、Reneeが言う通り、会社は何度も苦境に立たされてきました。外部環境、経済状況、競合企業、あらゆるものから、あらゆる角度で試されてきました。でも、前向きに考えて、困難を乗り越えていかねばなりません。私は常に前進しています。すごく早いわけではないけど、いつも前進しています。周囲が私に「調子はどう？」と聞くと、大抵「そこそこだね」と答えます。多くの人は「最高だよ！」と言うのでしょう。私の場合、最高ではないけど、そこそこ良いんです。毎日前進し続けたいと思わせてくれる程度には良くて、そういう毎日を十二分に楽しんでいます。「もっと上手くいったらな…」と思う日もあれば、「想像してたより良かったな」と思う日もある。そのくらいで僕は十分なんです。そして、この地に足のついた態度、未来へのレジリエンスが、Nvidiaでは大いに役立っています。
私たちの会社には、30年の長きに渡り在籍するリーダーたちがいます。私も30年在籍していますし、他にも30年在籍している人がいます。私の願いは、そういう人たちと命ある限り共に働くことです。ミスをしたり、四半期で結果を出せなかったり、目標を守れなかったりする人が、知らない間にいなくなるような会社もあります。でも私は、そういう会社は生産性が低いし、長続きしないと思っています。
私が皆さんに言えるとしたら、今年は悪い年だということです。だからと言って、今後一切、悪い年はやってこないとか、今年が最悪の年になるとも言えません。でも「そんなことは関係ないや」という態度で臨むのが良いと思います。

ジェンスン：そうだったね、お受けしましょう。

Ryan: What are your thoughts on the recent headwinds in the tech industry, and do you have any advice for current MBA students who were once considering the tech industry and maybe having second thoughts?

Jensen: No, the tech industry is great. These questions are so compound, don't you guys think? （audience laughing） And ambiguous. The tech industry is fantastic. I don't know what could be a more important industry in the future. And the reason for that is because influence is so many industries. You could argue Nvidia is in the pure tech industry. There are some tech companies that are in the internet services industry. Obviously, they're not in healthcare or they're not in forestry or they're not in manufacturing or so on so forth. But we are in the pure tech industry. And I could tell you that the pure tech industry is incredible. And the reason for that is because, obviously, it's at the core and foundation of every single industry, and every industry is gonna be a tech industry in the future to utilize the technology we create. And I love the work that we do. The environment is challenging. It's very tough. The environment is very tough, obviously. And there are friends that have been laid off, there are colleagues that have been laid off, there are spouses have been laid off, so it's tough out there, but it will pass. The size of the tech industry is one tenth of what it's going to be, 100th of what it's going to be. So, I think this is one of the most vibrant industries in the world, most exciting industries in the world and most impactful, so I would encourage all of you to consider it. And with respect to the advice in the near term, you've gotta be resilient to be great. There are a lot of ways you could describe me, but resilient has to be on top of that list. I've seen a lot of tough things, and the company has been on its back multiple times as Renee said. And we have challenges from the environment, from the economy, from competition, from all kinds of places. But you just have to keep a positive outlook and just keep walking past it. I'm always moving forward. I'm not ever moving forward too fast, but I'm always, always moving forward. And people ask me, "Hey, how's your day?" And I usually say, "Good enough." A lot of people say, "Incredible.” It's not incredible, but it's good enough. It's good enough for me to wanna keep on going everyday and I'm loving it plenty much. And I wish it was better some days, some days it's better than I thought it would be, but it's all good enough. And I think this even keeled attitude, resilience towards into the future has really served Nvidia well. And we have leaders in our company that have been there for a very, very long time. 30 years. I've been there for 30 years and there are others that have been there for 30 years, and my hope is that we work together for as long as we shall live. This attitude about building companies instead of revolving doors, and somebody makes a mistake or misses a quarter, and poof, they're out, or they miss a commitment, poof, they're out. I think that way of building a company is really not very productive and it's not very long-term-minded. And my advice to you guys is, it's a bad year. It's not going to be the only bad year that you're ever gonna enjoy, and I can't even tell you this is going to be the worst year, but your attitude should be, it doesn't matter.
