「松島海岸は駅を降りて、下に行ぐど、すぐに遊覧船出る岸壁と、水族館とかあってマンズ、海が眼の前だべ。防波堤だって、ずっと左奥に行かないど無いべっちゃ？んだのに、この海岸ぷちさ津波はさらりとキタだげだ。おらの家はずっと内陸の高木町の川近くだったがら、マンズ津波は大丈夫だったのはよぐわがんのよ、海がら遠いがらあだりめの話だども、この松島海岸ぶちは20m先がもう船着き場で海。それなのに不思議ど津波っこはサラサラの膝上ぐらいしか来ながった。不思議だべ？んだども何の不思議もないんだ。あの、遠くに並ぶ島々があんべ。あれさ救われたんだ。250ぐらいある大小の島が沖まで交互に入り組んで並んでだがら、津波がどんどんその力をソガイデ、岸壁に来た時は、ずいぶんパワーっこ、落ちてたんだべなぁ。んだガラこの辺は被害すぐながったのっさ」
どうだ、まくし立てて話をする、どうだ、という顔をしてそのおばさんは、聡の反応を見た。

　やがて、停車していた電車のドアが閉まって再び動き出した。聡は首だけ後ろを向いて海岸からすぐに山の中を走り始めた風景を眺めた。ガスン、ガスンと揺れながら電車はスピードを上げて、山淵の桜が折々点在している淡い緑の風景をどんどん追い越していく。聡は春がいい感じでこの地域にもやってきた、と心が少し浮ついてときめいた。聡の好きな季節がやってきたのだった。（冬来たりなば、春遠からじ）という誰かの言葉が浮かんだ。聡はもう冬は去ったな、と思った。長い長い冬だったな、と少し感慨深く思いながらどんどん追い越していく風景を眺めた。隣のおばさんが、にこにこしながら聡を見て何か言いたいのを我慢しているようだった。
