Things I miss of Genova (a poem)

"Things I miss of Genova"

I miss the 500 and 600 old buildings
The genovese and the salsa de noci
The 1 euro espressos

I miss the staircases at every corner
And the hilltop view overlooking the slate roofs

I miss the little old focaccerias
Their irresistible focaccias and chickpea farinatas

I miss the tall, tall buildings that
Block the Mediterranean sunshine from the narrow streets
And the people walking out to the port after rain
Desperate to get a little bit of vitamin D

I miss the colorful walls of Boccadasse
And the day trips to Nervi and Camogli

I miss discovering new food at Mercado Orientale
The cime di rapa and the countless pre-mixed rissotti

I miss the outdoor seating in the piazzas
The people gathering to enjoy aperitivo

I miss the Genoves' love for food and pride in their city
And how obviously untrue the "grumpy" stereotype is

I miss the melodic sound of Italian
The open vowels and the rhythm that lingers in your ear
The hand gestures and facial expressions

And how could I not miss
The insanely cheap yet delicious wine
And the friends I drank bottles and bottles of it with

I miss reading on the hostel couch
While someone plays guitar in the background

Befriending guests within minutes of checking them in
And spontaneously deciding to do stuff together

I miss the big meals we'd cook in that old high-walled kitchen
And the stories and music and drinks we'd share

I miss the sense of relief spending time with fellow staff
Whenever I was fatigued from the rapid hellos and goodbyes

I miss walking home from the bar on a chilly night
Being overly enamored by the beauty of life
And of the city
And of the moment

The Genova I miss
Is as much a time, as it is a place

'Til the day I get to go home,
Cheers to Genova
And to everyone who shared it with me

Arrivederci.

Arrivederci.
