今日は朝鮮半島 (the Korean Peninsula) の分断についてのニュース。

国連事務総長のグテーレス氏は、平和のための外交を増やすよう (a surge in diplomacy for peace) 求めました。

グテーレス氏の発言は、朝鮮戦争休戦協定の70周年を記念して (marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement) 述べられたものです。

この協定 (the treaty) は、この破滅的な戦争を終結させ (brought the devastating war on the Peninsula to an end)、平和と安定を維持するための法的基盤となっています (serve as a legal foundation for the preservation of peace and stability) 。

グテーレス氏は、まだ朝鮮半島は分断しており (remain divided)、核の脅威 (nuclear threats) により地政学的な緊張関係は高い状態のまま (with geopolitical tensions on the rise) であり、国際的な規範が尊重されていない (the erosion of respect for international norms) と警告していました。

「remain + 形容詞/過去分詞」の表現はたくさんあるので覚えておくと便利ですね。remain aloof from 何々 (～に無関心だ) / remain done up [buttoned] (ボタンが外れている [かかったままだ]) / remain competitive with other 名詞の複数形 (他の～に引けを取らない) / There remains considerable controversy about … (～についてはまだかなり議論の余地がある) / remain dubious of … (～を信じきれないでいる) / remain impartial (公平な立場を守る) / remain largely unchanged (ほぼ同じままである) / remain unresolved (未解決のままだ) / remain unknown (依然分かっていない) などなど。前置詞も来ますがそれはまた別の機会に。

定期的な外交上のやりとりを再開させ (the resumption of regular diplomatic contacts)、対話へつながる環境の醸成 (the nurturing of an environment conducive to dialogue) を促していました。持続可能な平和と朝鮮半島の完全かつ検証可能な非核化 (sustainable peace and the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula) が目標であるとしていました。
